I have served with gays because there are already gay men and women serving in the military, the only difference would be that they would now be allowed to show it. There are still people who look at gays as having something wrong with them or as a perversion. It would be a tough battle to overcome but I believe it can be done. Blacks were accepted, women were accepted. I know that a race or gender is completely different than a sexual orientation but the point is there were arguments against blacks and women. Arguments about would they fight as well, would they be accepted. It was a battle but they were excepted the same way I believe gays will. Yes, it is time to allow gays to be out in the open and serve in the military.

There have been gays in the military all over the world for centuries. It's nothing new. IN over years USN I knew several gays. I even went on liberty with 2 gay women while in Spain. A bit disconcerting looking at the same thing a woman is looking at. One asked me if I was any good at picking up women because she'd pay for the hotel room if I picked up one that went both ways (she was an E-7 top performer, as were the other gays I was stationed with.). My wife and I became very good friends with one of they ladies I was stationed with (including her E-7 USMC partner) and have kept in touch with both of them since 1986.

I served 22 years in the navy. We had two types of gays.

Type one did their jobs like everybody else and kept their personal lives out of things. They tended to do just fine.

Type two wore their homosexuality on their sleeves. They were flamboyant. Their orientation was painfully obvious. They tended to have a poor, short, military experience.

One of my better friends made it all the way to retirement (20) years. He was gay. He also understood good order and discipline. He was well liked on the ship we served on.

It's when I read questions like yours that I realize just how fundamentally little civilians really understand the military. Gays have served, they are serving and they will continue to serve.

I would absolutely not want to serve with gays in the military, the conditions in military bases do not leave much room for privacy, not to mention gays arent allowed anyways, it may be dont ask dont tell, but if theyre told on they can be kicked out

Not a problem. My maid of honor (shes in the military) is a lesbian. And one of the best friends I made in the military is a gay man. Most people do not care. As long as they keep it professional at work and do not hit on anyone...people are ok with it. At work gay or straight you should keep sexual comments to yourself...so we have no problem here right? You would be SURPRISED how many gay men and women are in the military. More than anyone could possibly put a statistic to!

I don't think his or her personal choice in sexual matters should make a difference in whether or not one should choose to serve along side with him or her for our country. You both have the same goals as far as being in the military are concerned and that is what matters. Just think of this person for who he is and not what he does in private.

No problem at all as long as both parties are clear about what is expected from each other.
I'm sure if you showed an interest in them in a sexual way you will get a response, but otherwise it is just the same as any other working relationship, and any way what makes you think they would fancy you any way. you may not be their type.

The guy sleeping on the top bunk next to me in BCT was gay. (I was on the bottom bunk)
I about kicked his ***. But, that wasn't because he was gay it was because he started hitting on me one night.

I also had a hair dresser in my unit once. During training when we had no access to a barber, he cut all our hair. It was kinda nice having him around. He didn't really have many male friends, naturally, but nobody really had a problem with him. He was a good guy.

Why would I care? As long as they don't try to hit on me or disrespect me. Just like I wouldn't want a straight person to do. They are Americans defending our country just like all the straight people and that is a very brave and noble thing to do.
