at what age do toddlers start learning to spoon feed themselves?

Babies can be exposed to spoon feeding when they are able to hold the spoon. If you allow them to hold the spoon when you are spoon feeding them, they get the idea that they have the power to do it too. If you allow them to play with dipping the spoon into something (try thick foods, like mashed potatoes) they will begin to understand what the spoon is for and how to use it. Most children with exposure to using a utensil from a young age (someone showing them how to do it and helping them) can use it independently by the time they are 18 months (this is with lots of spilling). With practice, they can do it with little spilling by the time they are two.

Rylee was around 13-14 months I think when she became pretty good at it. She held a spoon and put the food on it before then. Or she would just pick up the food with her fingers. She still has trouble with some foods-soups, chilis, stews, cream of wheat, etc. But for the most part, she feeds herself with a spoon and a fork. Just keep trying, she will get it! Every child is different and I am sure Little Miss Cady will get it in no time!

As soon as they can hold the spoon i would guess... My son's Ped said to let him feed him self... and that was when we went for his 18 month check up... So I suppose around that time would be good.. though all children are different...

It is a very messy time!!! make sure you have plenty of bibs.. :-) He is now almost 20 months and can feed him self with a fork or spoon..

Good Luck

Whenever you let them. Let them play with it, but help them eat as well. In the beginning, at least, they either choke themselves or miss their mouths completely. Mine was about 1 1/2 before she was using a spoon.

at around 9-10 months.. they should be interested in holding a spoon and trying to take it away from you.... at 12 they should hold it and attempt to feed themselves.... at 18 months they should be feeding themselves fairly well.... but unlike the last answer... they WILL still spill... at around 2 to 2 1/2.. they should be well on their way to a fairly clean meal without help.... but I dont know if youve noticed.. but all kids are messy.. heck my husband cant even eat without spilling... and my shirts all have a stain right on the center of the chest... LOL.. that salsa chases me I swear... lol.. good luck

my son is 14 months old and feeds himself. My daughter didn't start until she was almost two though. It depends on when they start taking the spoon from you when you are feeding them.

my 2 year old feeds himself, although he would rather use his hands than his spoon. As long as he's eating, I don't make a big deal out of it.

At around 12 months they start, and by 18 months they should be able to do it with little spillage.
