But just because it works on a pig doesn't necessarily translate it will work well on a human

No, I don't agree with it. Not only from a moral stand-point, but from a scientific one, as well. Accurate drug testing cannot be accomplished because animals don't share enough of the same DNA with humans.
I can't stand to think of the thousands of cats, dogs, rats, chips and other various animals who die and suffer everyday with virtually no advancement in medicine.
I think what we should do is enforce drug testing on the death row inmates. Cruel and inhumane? So is sentencing them to death and putting them on death row. Can you imagine day after day of knowing your dooms-day is getting closer and closer? It's mental torture. And hell, they're not doing anything useful in the prison while waiting, anyhow. They're going to die anyway. I think someone who shot-up a family for drug money is more deserving of this cruelty than innocent, living, breathing animals.

I have profound problems with matters such as this, yet even though I hate the idea, I still eat meat and dislike vegetables.
One of the paradoxes of life I suppose and one that is difficult to answer.
One thing I do know though is that the testing should not involve cruelty to the animals, no drug or face cream is worth that.

Whilst I don't like the thought of animals suffering, if I were in need of a life saving drug then I would not turn it down becasue it were tested on animals and I don't believe many animal rights activists would either! I think it is a necessary evil for the further development of medicine as testing on humans is not safe as we saw recently!

I think it is bad. I believe that everything we need to cure all illness is available in nature. The only reason drug companies develop more drugs is to make more money for themselves.

Absolutely! I think my cat has been acting strangely.. so I'll have him tested to make sure he's not on drugs (I think he sneaks a little catnip now and then)...
Seriously, for some things.. yes.. like medicines that are used to cure people of diseases...
For some things.. no.. like for cosmetics.. they should hire people that are allregic and test their cosmetics on them.. where it can be wiped off easily or whatever and they can be treated.. they could also get a better verbal description of how it feels when it is "going wrong"

No, animals have no say in the testing. Testing of drugs should be done on humans who volunteer--or, convicted murders and rapists. Besides, just because a chemical affects a certain animal in one way does not mean it will affect a different animal (such as a human) in the same way.

its a very difficult debate and i can only say that i personally do agree with animal testing to find important discoveries of medicine but i do not agree with cruelty to animals i know to some this may seem hypocritical, but take for instance a drug given orally to an animal to assess side effects they havent been cruel to the animal per se, to those who do not agree with this i feel they should put themselves forward as candidates for drug testing instead of the animals .....besides its the age old thing of if you dont know anyone with or who has died from diseases such as cancer you may well feel uncertain as to whether animals should be tested on. i dont think animals should be used to test beauty products as this is just vanity as humans rather than trying to create a cure for mankinds diseases...but at the end of the day everyone has and is welcome to their own opinion...

I feel bad for the animals but since the testing of drugs eventually leads to helping people I'm all for it. Too bad there wasn't a different way to test them though.

there is other ways to test drugs without using animals and getting the same results, the only difference is that with animals is cheaper. animal testing is just cruel.

I fail to understand the logic behind injecting an animal with cancer and then pumping it full of poison labeled medication and calling it research. Just mindboggling the levels of cruelty we're capable of in the name of science.
