For most kids it is mostly about self-expression, and very little to do with religion. Looking weird is half the fun... The basic idea is in finding beauty in darkness, which is not necessarily evil. It is a style that embraces all types and accepts imperfections, which some people find to be of great comfort. There are so many pressures in the world to fit a certain image, behave a certain way, conform, and when that gets to be too much, sometimes it feels nice to get away from that. You may want to talk to your friend about what is going on in her life right now, but I don't think there is any warning for her... "Dress normal or else people will think you're weird!" or, "You look spooky, don't go evil!" I don't know. You will probably get farther if you just said, "Hey, what is up?" ...and keep your own mind open.

The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture found in many countries. It began in the United Kingdom during the early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. The goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era, and has continued to diversify. Its imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from nineteenth century Gothic literature, mainly through horror movies.

The goth subculture has associated tastes in music and fashion, whether or not all individuals who share those tastes are, in fact, members of the goth subculture. Gothic music encompasses a number of different styles. Common to all is a tendency towards a lugubrious, mystical or fatalistic sound and outlook. Styles of dress within the subculture range from death rock, punk, androgynous, medieval, some Renaissance and Victorian style clothes, or combinations of the above, most often with black attire, makeup and hair.

The Gothic sub-culture has nothing to do with religion. Thus, it isn't Satanic. It's simply a style of dress and music that split off from the Punk scene in England during the 1970's.

The gothic is a genre and a style.

They appear in literature and also it started in the Victorian times and until now. It is not satanic at all.

In Japan, there are girls dressed in Victorian style clothing and some are called "Lolita girls", which is part of the "gothic" fashion.

They even sell magazines so you can make your own gothic garments. (It's all about creation)

If you like to take a look, "Visual K" is also a thing that is common in Japan: gothic fashion even in music.

Nothing satanic about your friend ^.^

It's "Goth", gothic is a style of architecture and genre of novels. Most Goths are Atheists. Lately it has become nothing more than a fashion trend for posers to take part in, but the style of dress used to be symbolic of a philosophy of rejection of conventional ideals and conformity, in favor of following one's own path. To, me being a Goth is about recognizing that there is ugliness in this world, and that ugliness can also be beautiful, and even necessary in certain circumstances. I ascribe to the philosophy that it is far better to be hated for who I truly am, than to be loved for ideals and attitudes that I'm simply conforming to. Some Goths may be Satanists, some may be Pagans, but far more are simply Atheists.

I'm guessing she's just going through a phase. No, she's not Satanic, since goths really never are. For her, its probably just a style, so don't worry.

Goth is a lifestyle, not a religion. There is nothing to warn her about. I know of a few kids who are Goth and are Christian. They like darker music, the clothes, the look. Basically it gets attention, and they like it too.

It's not a religion. It's about taste. There are numerous ways of life represented in the Goth Culture.

It's a lifestyle that embraces a certain way of dressing, music and so on. There are websites out there that will clear you up on the issue. They're not "satanic".

I'm a goth and I'm not satanic. To SOME it's a style - a phase. For others, like me, it's a lifestyle.
