Brooklyn Heights might be the safest neighborhoods in the entire city. Also, New York in general is a safe place and has been for many years. Don't believe what you see in movies. The only thing about Brooklyn Heights is it's also one of the most expensive neighborhoods in New York. How are you going to afford it?

And you need to make sure that the apartment you're being is actually in Brooklyn Heights -- that means west of Court Street and north of Atlantic Avenue. Try to pin down an exact address. The neighborhoods immediately surrounding the Heights are also safe, and actually a little more fun for an 18 year old, although they're pretty much just as expensive. The only surrounding neighborhood I might think twice about is Red Hook, mostly because it's not near any subway lines and is very isolated.

Brooklyn Heights is a great neighborhood to live, for an 18 year old male or a 96 year old lady. Out of curiosity, how are you going to be paying rent?

Totally safe, beautiful and very expensive. Good luck. A lot of places in that area have a screening process you have to go through to get a place. My friends had a tough time finding a place that accepted them because their combined income was 'only' about $80,000/year at the time and they had bad credit. They pay about $3000/month for their place now.

Of course, although I contend that most neighborhoods in NY are safe as long as you have friends. I have lived on the Upper West Side (96th and Riverside) in NYC as well as near the Polo Grounds (which people say is horrible). Nothing happened to me in either neighborhood.

Living in Brooklyn, NY alone could be really dangerous, just about as dangerous as living in Harlem alone. If you're planning on living in Brooklyn, or Harlem, don't live alone. Definetly not. I would personally recommend living in Manhattan if you are going to be living on your own. Hope this helps.

B.H. is one of the best neighborhoods in NYC. Assuming you're not a dope dealer or gang member it'll be perfectly safe.

Your only danger will be being plagued by old rich grandmothers asking you to fix their TVs.
