Hi, my recent dog just passed away a couple of weeks ago. It's been tough without a dog, and the presence and affection is deeply missed. We are looking to get a new puppy, and kitten. I was just wondering if any specific dog breeds are better with other animals than others. We are getting both young, so that should help growing up with each other. We're spending more time into researching and looking at dogs, so we probably will get the kitten 1 or 2 months before the pup. Any suggestions on breeds, info, tips etc...? thanks. Also, I really would like to get a pound puppy (our past 2 dogs were great dogs from the pound), but I am having a lot of trouble finding young baby pups in pounds. The youngest age I have found was 5 months or so.

First off very sorry for your loss, I empathize with you, stop trying so hard, when it is time, the right ones will come to you go by your gut feeling cuz it is never wrong. I know you need to fill the emptiness of your loss. But a five month old dog is a good age also, much younger requires more do you have that much time. Go with your gut feeling and it will come. Ask god to guide you as he hears all of our prayers and needs. Good Luck

Try a breed with a low prey drive, as someone else suggested. I would stay away from most hounds or any breed that is specifically bred for hunting, though if you're getting a puppy it probably won't matter, since he'll be used to the kitten right from the start. A mixed breed puppy should be fine, too. In terms of finding a puppy at the shelter, keep looking-I live in the Fort Lauderdale area in FL, and every once in a while they'll bring whole litters in for adopting. Check out your local pet stores or do an internet search to find additional shelters in your area-some shelters work exclusively through foster homes (a huge plus-you're more likely to get a puppy who's been housetrained and who's already been socialized with other dogs and even cats) and you can arrange to meet the puppy of interest in person. You can also try www.petfinder.com to search for puppies in your area-you can search by city/state, and you'll be able to see pictures of the dogs/puppies and the site will tell you which shelter has each dog/puppy.
The website below has great advice for introducing puppies and kittens, regardless of breed. Good luck! :)

I agree that you should try to find a dog/puppy with a low prey instinct. Try to find one that seems especially friendly, as it will probably be easier to socialize with the cat/kitten, and more interested in pleasing you. Dogs that are bred for hunting are more likely to chase the cat, which might scare it more. Our younger cat gets along with our lab mix, and our border collie mix, but our son's young boxer/? mix scares her a little. The cat is very daring, but the instincts of the third dog seem to put her more on guard. The way you raise them will certainly make a big difference, but pick a friendly and outgoing cat or kitten, one who does not seem aprehensive of new things, and does not hide or cower. Cats raised around dogs will often even sleep with the dog, or near the dog. Lab mixes are nice dogs, but any friendly, sociable dog should work. Does the dog really have to be a little baby puppy? If it has been around cats, or has the right temperment, the dog should still be a good companion or housemate for the cat, anyway.

Easy way to solve this - there is a legal limit to the amount of animals allowed in a single home. 7 rats, 2 cats and 2 dogs probably crosses the limit unless you live on a large plot of land. So tell her it's illegal for her to bring home another pet, and that if she does, the family will be fined and the pet will be taken away especially since there's a dog in the house that could be considered dangerous to other animals.

Any dog can be great with any animal if trained to be. I suggest a Rottweiler(We have two rotts and three cats and they live in harmony), Doberman(We had a doberman and cat together, they were fine and the doberman had been a adult from the pound) or German Shepherd(My Nana had a German shepherd and a cat, the shepherd ignored the cat).

i have found that siameese cats are nice with dogs. we had a rott and a siameese cat and they were perfectly fine together. Normally the dog you would want to get is one without a lot of prey drive, dont get a husky i have one right now it is a buttload of work to get them to agree with your cats. since your getting a puppy and a kitten at the same time, they will most likely grow up as friends either way.

If you are getting them both young and are raising them together, the breeds shouldn't be an issue. I'm so sorry to hear about your dog.

if you are looking for a certain breed of dog, I would suggest the basset hound. Basset hounds are fun loving dogs for almost anyone. They are great with adults AND children. They'll do pretty much anything you want them to do.

Puppy, if it's a female, Cosy
If it's a male, Timber.
Those are my puppy's names.
Get the youngest ones there.
P.S.
Treat them with respect!
Good Luck!
