This is one question I've never come up with an answer for. I keep thinking it isn't nice to cage something that is lucky enough to be able to fly. I don't think I agree with wing clipping - although if it's to prevent the escape of a bird that otherwise wouldn't survive in the wild.....?
I haven't ever had a pet bird myself, so I don't really know birds. I don't think you can really judge this sort of thing until you know the animal. We have a canary at work (in a vet surgery, and he SEEMS happy enough - certainly healthy, bright and lively, sings during the day. On the other hand, I was in PetsatHome the other day, and they had a huge aviary with zillions of canaries all zooming about, and it made me feel sorry for our little canary all by himself. I really don't know how birds react to contact - people with pet birds may be able to vouch that they love it and live richer lives because of it, for all I know.
So I just don't know in other words, hopefully you'll get some sensible answers from people who know birds!

I think it is wrong to breed birds as pets. They are not truly domesticated and are better off in the wild with their own kind. However I do believe we should care for the birds we already have in captivity as best we can. If anyone wants a pet bird, there are plenty in animal shelters and foster homes because they are long-lived and more work than most people think. Please adopt, don't buy from breeders!

I dont think theres anything wrong with having birds as pets. what I do think is wrong is when people put them in a "bird room", away from the family. I have three birds, and they seem very happy to me. they live in our living room, so theyre not alone, and we play music for them almost every day. we buy them new toys every few weeks, so they dont get bored, and we keep them well fed. we take our conure out of the cage sometimes and let her sit on our shoulders, and our lovebirds stay in their care, but they have each other, and, as lovebirds often do, love eachother.
If you take care of birds properly there is nothing wrong with having them as pets.

In my opinion, it's incredibly cruel to house a bird in a metal cage. Birds should be able to fly and be free, I know from experience that birds, when housed for many years, even lose the ability to fly. But, for example, if a kind owner treats a bird well and lets it fly around, well that would be okay.

yes i hate seeing birds in a cage they should be free to fly, when i see birds locked up i want to open the cages and let them out, ok now my boyfriend is disagreeing talking about extinction, if it wasn't for people caging birds most birds would not be around today, but hey that still hasn't changed my mind.

I have a peachfaced lovebird, since she has no feathered mate, I suppose I am mate. My baby is out of her cage and differently interacts with me at all times. When I get mad at other bird owners is when I find out the only time the cage is open is for cleaning or feeding duties. So I suppose I must answer both yes and no to your ?

I really don't like the idea. Birds are meant to fly free, not live in a cage. Just my opinion.

well not to me because when i had birds when they would get used to me i would open the cage and let them fly around the house and they wouldnt poop anywhere i had finches and cockatiels and when they would really be close i would even put the cage outside and open it and they wouldnt go far and they would always come into the cage, but i did clip theyre wings but they could still fly

If you keep them happy like let them fly around sometimes and play with them while keeping the cage clean with stocked food.
