If I only buy one loaf I keep it in a bread box. Otherwise I keep the extra in the freezer, I am here in Nebraska and the hot weather here molds breads quickly also. The bugs are weevils, they are a grain bug, they are small and can invest all grain and flour products. You get them one of two ways: sorry to say but the eggs are already in your product from the factory or mill they came from or second they come from your cabinet from another flour product they were in and have managed to crawl into another box.
As for my flour I keep it in the bag in the freezer to prevent weevil infestation.
And you are correct it is not from a dirty house, and this will happen in every part of the nation. You would be surprised with what you don't know you are eating in the foods we buy. It is just a fact of life. Even when you go to restaurants they purchase the food at the same place you and I do. This is a fact of life we can't avoid.

I think it is fine to leave the flour in the freezer to prevent mold and critters. I had an unopened bag of flour in my pantry (which I just opened this last weekend) and there were some kind of creepy crawlies nesting in there. YUCK!
The bread stays on the counter for about two days then off to the fridge!

I live in North Texas. I keep my bread in the pantry and my flour in an airtight canister. This is just where I have always kept it. We go through bread fairly fast...so it doesn't have time to sit there and mold.

I live in northeast. I keep my flour in the cabinet and I use it often because I make a lot of pound cakes. My bread is kept on the counter if we seem to be using it. Other than that, I store it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh. Although I have heard that keeping it in the refrigerator contributes towards its going stale.

I keep my flour in a plastic airtight container in the pantry, and I keep my bread in a basket on top of the fridge. Why? I have no idea really--because they fit where they are? :)

I keep bread in the bag in my office, and flours are in sealed plastic canisters. My office can get warm and the window is usually open, but the flour is fine, and we go through bread before it could ever go bad. That's in CA.
