When I'm asleep at night, I partially cover my face. Sometimes I wake up to my cat staring me dead in the eyes softly touching my face with it's paw. After the first touch, it usually ends with a slightly harder swat. Is this some kind of game for him?

thats your cats way of telling you that he wants to play

No, your cat is not playing with you.
He is looking at you sleeping and he tried to figure out your face (and your smell).
But, then you wake up, he feels uncomfortable, so he gives you a little one instead. Come on! He can not show the feeling like that right in the eye, caught in the act....
My cat 7 years old are doing the same..... ;o)

two possibilities: he asks for attention and wants to play, or he just hunts!! When your face is covered, is just like a hidden animal under the blanket, and the cat can perceive movement and breath and reacts to it. Some of my cats used to hunt my legs and one even bite at night. If I woke up he would still try to catch and bite me. The only solution was to shut the door and not let him in the bedroom at night for a while.

He really wants your attention. Cats don't sleep all through the night like humans can. They wake up to eat, drink, do whatever, and maybe get a little attention. That's what humans are for, aren't they? :)

My cats do that sometimes just to get pet or if they are hungry. I usually try to make sure they have food enought for the night so I don't have to get up to feed them.

I guess you could call it a game.

There were times I could feel my cats paw touching my leg under the covers but she couldnt quite get under and then she would come up to my face and touch it with her paw. I guess it was her way of saying she wanted under the covers and when I raised the blankets up , under she would crawl, and stay there till I got up.

All of my cats have done that it seems. At times,I have been hooked in the mouth by an overly playful swat.It hurt,so I curled my finger and popped it right in the head.It soon got the idea,it is fine to lay there--I like it--you like it.
However,it is not fine to hook me in the mouth.Any hooking was promptly answered with a pop--it was mad,I was mad--however,things changed.
They finally learn to associate getting popped with hooking my lip.
We kissed and made up and things were fine.It beats the heck out of getting rid of the cat.I would stroke it while it was there and it loved it.

Yes, it is all in fun and he's wanting attention. We have 3 cats and one of the males does this to my husband just about every night. He puts his cold, wet nose directly against my husbands, my husband will turn his head and Gizmo will foloow his nose with his own nose. I think it's funny although it's not me he's waking up, LOL!

It wants your attention. My cat would hit me in my face and run away before I can catch her when I'm trying to sleep.

Your cat does that to get your attention. My cat does that to me when I'm in bed or on the computer.

Maybe he sees your eye lashes moving when you are sleeping. When you are experiencing rapid eye movement while in a deep sleep he only sees it move and therefore is intrigued. He probably gets rougher about it because it doesn't move when he tries to move it.

He's trying to play with you. Cats are nocturnal by nature - they probably wonder why we sleep when it's dark!
