Where on earth did the old wive's tale come from that a pure bred dog will be ruined if she is mismated. Do people actually believe that if a pure bred has a mixed litter then that girl could never have a pure bred litter if bred to a male of the same breed? Geesh! Then I guess a woman is ruined if she has a child by one man and then gets pregnant by a different man later on. Why on earth would you think like this?

If a ***** has a mixed breed litter, it does not mean "her" bloodlines are no longer "pure". This mix puppies are not purebred. It has nothing to do with the ***** at all.

Ignorance

old wives tales
Take your pick.
It is sad that people do not read, exercise common sense or even think anymore.

I've been talking about this with my mom, who is a groomer and a breeder. She doesn't know the answer either. I guess it has to do with people thinking that once a purebred dog has been bred by a different breed, she's 'impure' in the same way that a girl who is raped by a person of a different race is 'impure'. Most of the time, dog breeds are prevented from breeding, so 'rape' would be a decent way of describing it. We took a wolf dog into our home after he had been abused by the Native Americans on the reservation near us, and he bred our female rottweiler. The puppies were adorable and we sold them for $30 each. We never bred the rottweiler again because she wasn't meant to breed.
Many people think that the girl would never have a purebred litter after she was misbred. I personally think its a load of bull. But many dog breeders have come to the vet asking to either put down their dog or spay her because of that reason. Most of the time, we take them in and adopt them out. But there are a lot of people who think that.
Its just a stupid fantasy, like having a cat will make you infertile(by just being around it) or like cats will consciously kill babies. Its not true, but people want to believe it and when people who dont like something about that animal hear it, they spread it like its a true story and everyone believes it. Its really stupid, but its human nature.

I probably stemmed from the fact that dogs can sire pups from more than one sire in the same litter. For example, if your Golden Retriever is mated with a Golden Retriever male but she gets loose and also mates with a Boxer, you can have purebred Golden Retriever puppies and Golden/Boxer pups in the same litter.
The idea that such a mating 'ruins' the female for future purebred pups is ignorant and has no truth behind it. Unfortunately, it is still a very common belief. For example, check out poster #1's answer...

Her bloodline would not be ruined, the pedigree for that mixed pup will show that it wasn't pure bred.
Unfortunately, there are some gullible people out there and they don't take the time to research before opening their mouths.

As little as 100 years ago that was practically a law of physics. Many even wanted to not allow gets from those b*tches to be listed in a stud book. Common knowledge has evolved right along with the horse & buggy.

I think this came from WAY back in the dark ages when people didn't believe the female contributed to the offspring's potential. IF the pups had any similarity between the first & second litter it HAS to be the sperm from the first male "contaminated" the second litter! Nayy can't POSSIBLY be that they have the same MOTHER!!!

this is indeed old beliefs.that the female could no longer produce "pure" puppies.all comes down to genes.and the matches.it seems ridiculus as you say so if a woman mates with outside of her race all following children will be of the race she first mated with.hogwash-old thinking-but i remember if a papered female had a litter outside of her breed the future puppies would no longer be accepted by akc-years ago

This comes from ignorance and stupidity!!!! There is no reason to think like this, unless you are thinking money-wise. It would be easy to spin a tale like this if you were looking to price your dogs higher or ruin your competition in the world of dog breeding. People who think like this are completely wrong in their priorities, and shouldn't be breeding!
Hope this helps!

You know, that is a very good question. I never really thought about it. It's not like sperm sits around until she is pregnant again. (am i allowed to use that word--hope so). I hope someone can give you a good answer because I just don't know. It sounds like something someone started to increase the value of their own dog and decrease the value of someone else's.
