Shepherds Pie

Recipe Ingredients
500g Minced Lamb
800g Potatoes
1 large Carrot
1 large Onion
60ml Milk
30g Butter
50g Cheddar (Mature)
200ml Beef Stock
1 tablespoon Tomato Puree
1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil
1 tablespoon Flour (plain)
1/2 teaspoon Rosemary (dried)
1/2 teaspoon Thyme (dried)
Salt
Black Pepper
Cooking Time: 70 minutes
Serves: 4 people
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (gas mk 6, 400°F). Dice the onion and carrot. Heat the oil in a large saucepan and add the onion and carrot. Fry for 5-8 minutes stirring occasionally until the onion is lighlty browned. Meanwhile, skin quarter and boil the potatoes in water until softened.
2. Add the minced lamb to the onion and carrot and fry for a further 10 minutes, stirring and breaking up the mince with a wooden spoon.
3. Stir in the flour. Add the beef stock, rosemary, thyme and tomato puree. Season with black pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes until most of the liquid has evaporated.
4. Mash the potatoes with the butter and milk until smooth. Grate the cheddar and mix into the potato with a pinch of salt.
5. Check the lamb for seasoning, adding salt if necessary (be careful with the salt as your beef stock will already contain salt). Spoon the lamb into a baking dish, and cover with the mashed potato. Use a fork to draw ridges across the top if desired.
6. Bake the shepherds pie for 35 - 40 minutes until the potato is lightly browned.
You can use minced beef in this recipe instead of lamb to make cottage pie.
If you want the top of the shepherds pie to be browned more, put a little butter on top of the potato.

REAL ENGLISH SHEPHERDS PIE!

1 onion, diced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lb. lamb, minced
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 large carrot, diced
1 beef stock cube
1 lb. chopped tomatoes
1 tablespoon corn flour
3 tablespoons tomato puree
pinch of salt and pepper
2 lb. potatoes
1 stick butter

This is how to make a real English shepherds pie, made with lamb. If made with beef, it would be known as cottage pie.
Firstly, heat the olive oil in a pan, add the onion, garlic and carrot and cook until soft. Add minced lamb and stock cube, then cook until the mince is brown and shows a crumbly texture. Stir in the tomatoes and tomato puree, and add the corn flour. Leave to simmer, stirring occasionally, for about fifteen minutes, or until thickened.

Meanwhile, peel and chop potatoes and boil until soft, then mash them with the butter and salt and pepper to taste.

Put the filling into a deep dish, then top with the mashed potatoes and put under a warm grill (broiler) until the top is brown and crisp.

Delicious topped with melted cheese. Enjoy!

DRUNKEN SHEPHERD'S PIE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1-1.5 lbs extra lean ground beef
1 can corn niblets
1 small can mixed peas and carrots
1 package brown gravy mix
Newcastle beer (1/4-1/3 bottle)
mild cheddar cheese, shredded
1 small yellow or Vidalia onion, diced
6-7 cups mashed potatoes, seasoned and buttered to taste
(potato buds instant work very well)

Melt 2 tablespoons butter and 1/4 teaspoons salt in a large skillet on medium heat. Dice onion into small squares. Add onions to butter and mix well to coat. Cook on medium low until very soft/transparent.
Add ground beef to onions, until very lightly browned and crumbled, add Newcastle Beer, continue to cook on medium-high and stir to keep meat small and crumbly, until done. Drain excess fat and beer from meat in colander, transfer to a separate bowl and cover.

Drain corn and peas/carrots in colander until all excess moisture is gone. Transfer to a separate bowl.

prepare gravy mix (1 cup cold water, whisk in gravy powder slowly, bring to a boil, then remove from heat, continue to stir to prevent clumping, as soon as gravy looks smooth, add about 4 tbsp cold water, stir and mix into beef/onion mixture, cover and set aside. (mushroom gravy works very well also)

Prepare mashed potatoes to taste

In a medium casserole dish, add 1/4 pat of butter near each corner. Put either a layer of pie crust in, or a thin layer of mashed potatoes (or both) spread meat/onion mixture into casserole dish, add layer of mixed corn, peas, and carrots. add thin layer of cheese if desired, then top with a layer of mashed potatoes thick enough to reach 1/2 inch below the edge of the casserole dish.

Add a layer of shredded mild cheddar cheese (and another layer of pie crust if desired) and a few small pats of butter placed randomly on top of cheese and potatoes.

Bake at 350°F for 1 hour, or 425°F for 35 minutes.

If worried about burning cheese due to lack of pie crust topping, add cheese 1/2 way through cooking time.

These are really good inside their own small pie shells, to serve individually - simply reduce cooking time until bubbly.

Grandma's Shepherds Pie

This easy version of shepherd's pie has corn; you can use ground beef or mild ground sausage.
INGREDIENTS:
1 pound ground beef, browned
1 or 2 cans corn, drained
5 or 6 potatoes, peeled, boiled, and mashed with milk and butter
PREPARATION:
Put the meat in the bottom of a casserole dish or Dutch oven. Add corn on top of meat. Add mashed potatoes on top, making sure the potatoes touch the sides of the dish all around. Bake 1 hour at 350.
I sometimes substitute a pound of the mild sausage that comes in a roll instead of the ground beef.

My husband likes it with creamed corn instead of plain corn.

Sheepherders Pie

You use leftover, diced beef in this tasty shepherd's pie variation.
INGREDIENTS:
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chopped onion
2 tablespoons chopped green pepper
1/2 cup diced celery
1 cup diced cooked beef
4 tablespoons flour
2 cups of milk or beef stock
1/2 cup diced cooked carrots
Mashed Potatoes, enough for 4 to 6 servings
PREPARATION:
Brown onions, peppers, celery in oil.
Add beef and continue browning.
Add remaining ingredients and heat thoroughly.
Pour into a shallow greased baking dish. Cover with mashed potatoes and bake in a hot oven (400 degrees) for approximately 15-25 minutes till brown.

Shepherds Pie in a Frying Pan

You can serve this shepherd's pie right out of the frying pan; this way you only have 2 pans to clean.
INGREDIENTS:
1-2 pounds ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 cup beef bouillon
1-2 tablespoons flour
salt and pepper to taste
1 small package frozen corn
prepared mashed potatoes (4 to 6 servings)
PREPARATION:
(If you have an oven proof frying pan, you can brown beef, bake and serve out of the same frying pan so you only have one pan to clean. If not, layer ingredients in a baking dish.)
Brown the ground beef and add onions when almost done.
I make a ground meat gravy in mine so you can add a little beef bouillon ( I like Bovril liquid), water and a little flour (go light with the flour a lot of the moisture cooks off).

Place a layer of either canned or frozen corn over the top of the beef mixture and place the mashed potatoes on top of everything.
Bake in a 350 F oven until bubbles.

Shepherds Pie With Veggies

Made with peas and carrots and topped with mashed potatoes, this is a meal in a dish.

4 cup mashed potatoes
2 beef cubes or 2 teaspoon beef stock
1 1/2 cup water
1/2 cup grated chedder cheese
2 carrots, diced, cooked
1/2 cup frozen peas, cooked and drained
PREPARATION:
Lightly brown onion in a little fat. Add ground beef and brown. Crumble stock cubes or sprinkle on stock powder. Add 1 cup water, carrots and peas; simmer 10 minutes. Thicken with corn starch mixed in 1/2 cup of water.
Spread in baking dish, cover with seasoned mashed potatoes. Sprinkle cheese on top. Bake 20 minutes at 375 degrees until potato is heated and browned on top.- Sue

Very easy. What you need:
Ground beef (or turkey, which is healthier)
canned cream corn
potatos
butter/milk etc (to make mashed potatos)
--------------------------------------
Heat oven to 350 degrees
spray casserole dish with Pam (or similar baking spray)
Brown ground beef/turkey in a frying pan over medium heat. Should take about 10 or 15 minutes. Spread this over the bottom of casserole dish, leave room for two more layers.
Second layer is cream corn, no need to heat up ahead, just open can and pour over meat. If corn is veryvery liquidy (which is usually the lesser quality brands) drain some liquid first.
Boil potatos, then mash exactly as if you're making a batch of mashed potatos.
Spread these over top of the corn.
Sprinkle a light dusting of peprika over the top if you like
Bake uncovered for 30-45 minutes, remove from oven, cool and serve. Garnish with ketchup if you like.(I do!)

Shepherd's pie is really easy to make ... put the 'ingredients' in the bottom of your 'pan' (you may use any kind of 'baking' pan, but a 'deep dish pie pan' works best) ... there should be some meat (usually lamb but you get 'beef' more often here in America) ... either cooked 'stew meat' or browned hamburger ... and some 'vegies' ... yellow onions, carrots, and possibly some turnips ... and 'cover that' with a 'thickened gravy' made from the 'meat browning' plus some water and thickener (I use corn starch, because that is 'clearer' than flour) but you can use some 'powdered' AuJus mix from a package and add water and thickener ...but BE CAREFUL because there is a lot of 'salt' in that so you'll need to use 'just a tiny bit' ... and add a quarter of a cup of BLACK COFFEE at the end of the 'thickening' ... I don't really know why, but all of my best 'brown gravy' tastes WAY BETTER if I add just a bit of that black coffee (made as a drink, not the grounds) to it ... and it also looks 'darker and richer' too. Then make some MASHED POTATOES ... make them 'light and fluffy' and add just a 'bit of butter' and a 'teeny tiny' bit of salt (taste the gravy ... if you can taste the salt, don't add any to the potatoes) and sort of spread the mashed potatoes THICKLY on top of your 'stew-stuff' ... then you put it into the oven and 'cook' it ... if you have 'heated it up' and are using COOKED VEGIES (Shepherds' Pie is a way to 'use up leftovers' and is traditionally made from already cooked stuff) then you'll cook it at 450 degrees for about 5-10 minutes ... just until the potatoes start to get 'brown' on the 'spiky tops' ... if you are using 'uncooked vegies and meat' then you'll need to 'pre-cook' it for an hour at 325 degrees, then turn the oven up to 450 degrees for about 5 minutes for the 'browning of the spuds' ...
The 'whole trick' to a good Shepherd's Pie is the 'mashed potatoes' on the top ... sort of like the top pie crust, but it's still potatoes. Virtually 'everything else' can be 'different' every time you make it ... you can even make it with chicken or fish if you want. All it 'really needs' to be a Shepherd's Pie is the 'mashed potato crust' on the top ... which makes me wonder why it's not called Potato-Crust Pie, or Spud Grower's Pie ... but that is my problem. Yours is just to make, eat, and ENJOY.
I do have one other 'little bit' to tell you, though ... you won't 'mark' your baby if you get and give in to 'cravings' ... that is an OLD WIVE'S TALE that is NOT TRUE. You actually get 'cravings' when you are pregnant because there are now TWO of you being supported in one body ... and your 'cravings' are your body telling you that it 'needs' something that is in that 'craved food' ... so go ahead and 'give in' no matter how 'crazy' your cravings are ... I 'craved' vanilla ice cream with chopped up dill pickles on top when I was pregnant. My son was 'weird' ... but only because he always thought it was 'just fine' to have green beans for his vegie at dinner and then ask for a big bowl of green beans for 'dessert' too ... even when we were eating in 'fancy restaurants' ... there were some 'terribly embarrassed chefs' who though I was a 'bad mom' until my kid CRIED because the chef tried to get him to eat some 'cake or ice cream' when all he wanted was a bowl of green beans. Now he's a dad ... and his girls think that 'green beans' are not just 'good a vegies and desserts' ... they also eat them as 'snack food' ... preferably picked fresh and eaten raw from the garden.

Shepards Pie is a really easy recipe to conjure up. I'm enclosing the simplified version so you can make it with ease and comfort:

1 sirloin steak cut into bite sized pieces
1/2 yellow onion, diced
1 package frozen stewing veges, thawed
2 jars beef gravey
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 cup beef broth
2 yukon gold potatoes
3 T butter
1/4 - 1/2 cup milk, heated
salt and pepper to taste

Season meat with salt and pepper and brown in skillet with a little olive oil. Brown onion and remove. In mixing bowl, place meat, onion, veges, gravey, and beef broth. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and place in baking dish. Dice yukon gold potatoes and boil in salted water until fork tender. Drain and mash with butter, milk, and salt and pepper. Top meat mixture with potatoes and dot with butter. You can also add some shredded cheddar cheese as well if you want. Bake for 1 hour in a 350 degree oven, or until golden brown and bubbling.

"mark your baby with cravings???" I can tell you how I make shepherd's pie, but that business about your baby being "marked" by your cravings is nonsense.

Shepherd's Pie

5-6 medium potatoes, boiled, drained and mashed.

1 1/2 cups left over cooked lamb, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 large can butter beans, drained
2 cups left over gravy, or 1 large jar brown gravy

Heat all ingredients except mashed potatoes together. Season to taste
Place in casserole dish. Top with potatoes.
Bake at 375 degrees about 30 minutes until hot & bubbly, and the potatoes are browning on top.

The way Mom used to do it was to use left-over meat (steak, ham, etc) or fry up some ground beef if there wasn't any left-over.

Then in a casserole pan, place a layer of meat, a layer of green beans (cooked or canned -- drained either way), cover with a beef gravy, then top with a thick layer of mashed potatoes. Then bake for one hour till hot all the way through.

I don't know if this is "traditional" Shepherd's Pie, but it was the recipe that was passed down to her from her father, and his mother, etc., for 5 generations.
