I've been seeing this in circulation on the Organic Consumers Association and the FDA and USDA will allow all almonds to be mandatory pasteurized. The Public is not as aware on this.

This concerns me. I dont want anymore chemicals in my food!
Why do they think this is necessary?

Interesting isn't it. When in doubt, follow the money. Seems 1 person became ill, I think in California, can't remember. It wasn't proven that it was from the almond, but be cause we are all idiot children who can't decide what's bad for us, the gov steps in. Someone lobbied, and lobbied hard for this...so find out who stands to gain from this, and you'll find out why it happened.

So, many of us are going to be growing our own almond trees. In many cases they will produce by the second year. Oh, and FYI, even almonds labeled 'organic' will have been pasteurized.

And for those of you who don't know, when you pasteurize something, you not only kill any bacteria,(something simply washing would take care of) you also kill all that is good for you. The object is no longer a whole food.

Pasteurization does not involve chemicals. The process allows food to be stored WITHOUT chemicals by killing off bacteria before packaging through heat.

The first answer is correct about pasturization.

People can choose to drink alcohol and can tell when a beverage has alcohol.

People cannot always tell if food is contaminated. There have been problems w/ salmonella on raw almonds.
