Last night I was driving on the highway (left lane) going at least 20mph over the speed limit when I saw a cop in the middle lane. So naturally I got out of the left lane and into the center lane. I was at least 2 car lengths behind the cop. We were both going the same speed, 60mph in a 50mph zone. He then switches into the right lane and I maintain 60mph. He gets behind me, flashes his lights and then said I was tailgaiting him, but he wasn't going to write me a ticket for that. Instead, he wrote me up for speeding 10mph over the speed limit. If he was going the same speed should I appeal it

No. He has documentation to prove that you were speeding and it will just make you look like a fool before the court to try and get him into trouble as you do not have any proof of him speeding. Sure you have your storey but he has documentation with proof of your fault. I know you don't want to hear this but save yourself the embarassment and pay the ticket.

Although I disagree was some of the comments, most are correct in that the officer was most likely pacing from the front.

It's funny that some will run up behind a marked car well above the speed limit and then think about how the officer is speeding...not to mention how it is believed the officer can't see the speeding violation occurring as it approaches him.

With all the radar detectors on the road, I've found it just as easy to pace rather than use radar.

So...whether the police are using radar or pacing techniques, best thing to do is stay at the speed limit. And...as a reminder to those who think the police are REQUIRED to give you a certain amount over the limit...wrong!

Best wishes!

nope you don't have a leg to stand on he was legally pacing you.. so you can only say that you were following the speed of the traffic. pacing is one of the best ways a cop and get you because its more accurate than radar or the laser. when i see a cop driving on the road i do the limit or "grace" which is about 5 miles above the limit .. you were doing ten which is legal for him to give you a ticket. he probably gave you a break when you got out of the left lane but when you followed him he got paranoid and wrote you up. i have a radar detector, a cb and i think like a cop on the road
ps at least i can say " geee mr police officer was i going that fast ?" blink blink haha in a sweet little voice haha
does'nt work? haaa i'm a nun and i gotta get back to the nunnery.. yeah thats it!!!!
