Ultram is a narcotic as well as is Vicodin. Vicodin however, contains acetaminophen (Tylenol). Most Vicodin tabs come 5mg of hydrocodone and 325mg of acetaminophen. They both work by binding to pain (opioid) receptors to decrease the pain sensation sent to the brain. You can check any website that give you information about drugs. They will tell you what classification the drug is... opioid analgesic is the class these two fall in.
Ultram, I believe, is not considered a controlled substance like Percocet, Vicodin etc... It is not as strong, and does not make you as drowsy as other narcotics.

Ultram (tramadol ) is nothing like vicodin. Vicodin is a narcotic pain reliever for mild to moderately severe pain....that works. Ultram has not provided pain relief for anyone I knew that took it. However, the experts say it works well for pain, and it may work for you.
For Ultram:
http://www.medicinenet.com/tramadol/article.htm
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Tramadol is an effective pain reliever (analgesic). Its mode of action resembles that of narcotics, but it has significantly less potential for abuse and addiction than the narcotics. Tramadol is as effective as narcotics in relieving pain but does not depress respiration, a side effect of most narcotics. Tramadol is not a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID), and does not have the increased risk of stomach ulceration and internal bleeding that can occur with the use of NSAIDs.

I think it's a great pain reliever, and it's non-narcotic, and safe to take daily.
