don't go in Undesignated unless you literally cannot get get otherwise. being Undesignated means you will be assigned to Deck Divisioon and will not have any say in the matter until you get to the ship and look into Striking into a rating. some ships will not let you strike right away either.

Whatever position they assign you, you can always strike as something else, even for a job not represented on the ship. The main thing is to keep your chin up and maintain morale. I have seen so many seaman and fireman apprentices screw up their lives with drugs and alcohol, all because they don't realize that they have the chance to actually choose a great career instead of being stuck with a rate right from MEPS.

You will be assigned a job. Strike as soon as you can and if your lucky, and if they need you in the area you strike in, before your first enlistment is up you'll get to chose your job. I know this sucks but I know because I was an AA and the only thing I got to chose was the East cost. Good Luck

Pretty low. If you are very outstanding in capabilities, demeanor, and accomplishment, you might be able to "strike" for a better rate (job) even after you've been assigned to some low-level job. If your record looks good and you do exceptionally well in boot camp, you might be able to get into something better than what you'd otherwise be assigned to. Hard work and a good attitude go far.

If you have not left for the meps tell your recuter that you want a rate and choose wisely. the seabees are always looking for a few good folks.
