You don't have to be a bible literalist to be a model Christian.
The only requirements I'm aware of are:
1) Belief that Jesus existed
2) Belief that Jesus was the divine son of the Christian God
3) Following the teachings of Jesus
To be honest, taking the whole bible literally is a bad idea anyway. There are a lot of contradictions and obvious changes in writing style, and many errors (such as insects only having 4 legs, to point out a silly one).
I say, if you believe in Jesus, just follow his teachings and be a good person. The rest of the book is best used as a lesson, not a literal account.

I don't think there is any way to define a "true" Christian. There are different groups of catholics (little c meaning all Jesus followers) who believe different things.
For myself, I do love religion as a source of hope and as a sincere belief, however I do not "agree" with everything that is in the bible. I think of it like, it was written so long ago and only specific parts got put in and others got left out. How do I know what is really from god and what some random man put in there as his interpretation. What specifically don't you like about it? I think as long as you have the main idea, everything else is just details - that have to be left open to interruption because the bible wasn't written in English and i know that the meanings could have got lost somewhere down the line.

You don't have to buy everything in the bible. It was written for a different time and place, and much of it is mistranslated or otherwise corrupted. The most important thing in being a Christian is living like Christ did. Care more about others than yourself, give to the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, etc. Love your fellow neighbor and don't hurt anybody, either physically, emotionally or financially. If you live with true love and compassion, just as Jesus did, then I don't think it matters if you believe Jesus is the son of God, or God, or that he died to save you from your sins, or any of the fundamental christian beliefs. God will accept you into the highest levels of paradise it you live as Christ did.

If you mean you find the stories and morales in the Bible to be worthless besides Jesus then your in the same boat Jesus was in when he became a Prophet. Everybody says Jesus wasn't a prophet because he is God, are limiting the powers of God aren't they? That said, if you blieve in Jesus then follow what he teaches, they work a lot better then what others teach.

Well what you should do in my opinion is read a chapter a day out of Matthew,Mark,Luke,or John and meditate on His word day and night. Ask God to send the Holy Spirit to help you understand His word and you will start receiving Revelation knowledge which is far better than people trying to tell you. I can't expect you to believe me but my personal experiences with Him are mind-blowing Awesome! Take care and may God bless you spiritually. P.S. It is an awesome life to live in the supernatural.

You can't be a TRUE Christian if you "don't buy it" You can however believe what Jesus tried to teach without all that other "stuff".
Try to separate what Jesus actually said from what someone decades later said he said. There's a difference.
Also you might consider Deism. You can believe in God without any religious dogma whatsoever. God can be whatever you feel he is. You have a brain, use it. You have beliefs, follow them. Don't let someone else tell you what to believe.

Look into the Unitarian or Unity churches. These are two separate denominations. They are among the more liberal denominations within Christianity, and do not require their congregants to hold certain absolute beliefs found in the stricter denominations (i.e., Biblical infallibility and so forth). There's more than one type of Christianity out there. Explore them all. Don't worry about people who call themselves "true" Christians and then exercise bigotry and intolerance in the most un-Christlike ways possible.

Thinking that Jesus was awesome is a good way to start -- read more about Jesus and pick out certain qualities of his that you would like to imitate.

If you truly wanted to believe, you would earnestly ask Jesus into your heart and repent. Then you would receive the Holy Spirit and you would have proof beyond a shadow of a doubt.
