that can automatically close and lock all of the doors in the school the minute a large enough piece of metal like a gun can be detected, with signals being sent to all rooms in the building, and to the security police of the institution involved.

We now have companies that have similar devices to detect explosives and can detect the gun powder in the guns shells and these devises should be used in conjunction with the metal detectors!

A better idea is to just let everyone carry a gun.

Interesting living in a country where personal freedoms are so highly regarded but at the same time to protect this fundimental right children are sent to armed schools to ideally save them from being shot by their own. One might wonder what's preventing anyone from taking out a school bus or just shooting though the windows of the school or sniping the school grounds at recess. Should all schools have armed cops, teachers with concealed weapons, metal detectors, barbed wire fences - sure. If that's what you want for yourselves why not. It's a free country. I'm not overly sure what it would solve though, sadder still is the fact children have to worry about it and pay the price.

Metal detector itself is non-discriminant, it can be a laptop, a bike, a metal cup or a engineer projects.

There must be security guard to operate it and enforce it. Each entrance to each building require a set of devices and personnel.

With the volume of students going in and out of buildings, it is almost impractical. I think it will be just as bad as airport.

You think education is expensive now, think about how many times it will cost more if such system in place.

In stead of hiring all these security guards and equipments, it may be better off hire of counselors and psychiatrist to help people.

Or even better yet, forces students to take evaluations or a counseling class to learn how to relief stress and calming emotions.

If every time a piece of metal that WASN'T a gun (or a knife) was detected, you would have to go around and unlock all the doors, etc.

I can almost gaurantee some people would mess with it - just to watch the ensuing chaos.

There's not much you can do in situations like this (except maybe unless you are the school - and then you can definitely GET OFF YOUR AZZ AND LOCK THE DAMN PLACE DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea; however it is impractical and impossible to do due to the cost. Are you willing to pay an additional 1/4 of million dollars in taxes a year to pay for them. There are a lot of schools out there and you can't skip any; if you put the equipment in one you have to put it in all of them. No individuals life is of any greater value than another.

This was a COLLEGE, not a high school. They were all adults, not children we 'must' protect. Would you do the same thing for all office buildings (well, some of them already have that), public libraries, malls, grocery stores, hotels, churches, etc. etc.?
