I tend to agree with this quote.
"The purpose of scripture or the doctrines of religion is to keep people from dwindling in unbelief and to ultimately help bring their souls into a state of cleanliness, that they may dwell with their Father in heaven in the eternities. It is a step-by-step process."

--John H. Vandenberg, "To Cleanse Our Souls", Ensign, Nov. 1975, 42

What do you think the purpose of scripture is? Also, what do you think of this quote?

I believe the scriptures are to be used as a guide to how to live our lives. We can become closer to God and know what His plan is for our lives if we will abide by the precepts and doctrines found in the scriptures. Without them, we can personally witness to each other all day that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love us, but through scripture study, we learn about the atributes of our Father and of our Savior. And just how much we are like them. I believe the scriptures are like letters from a loving Heavenly Father who wants us to succeed in this life - and be happy. Which is why we are here - to be happy.

If "scripture" - by which I intend any "holy writ," not only the Bible - possesses any value at all, it's in instruction and inspiration. That some people have taken texts from the holy books and interpreted them as literal history, or weilded them as weapons of oppression and tyranny, only proves that those people have no grasp either of intellectual, moral, OR spiritual Truth.

As for the quote, standard bilgewater.

Not that I would ever contradict a general authority, but to put it in simpler terms, the scriptures are our guide book for life. We often hear that it is a shame that children don't come with an instruction manual. The scriptures are our instruction manual for life itself. Search the scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life and they are they that testify of me. So said the Savior about the scriptures. And this is life eternal that they might know thee, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. So searching the scriptures helps us to know God and Christ and that is what leads to life eternal. However, the scriptures are not the only means of coming unto God and Christ. We must also pray diligently for assistance, practice the teachings we have been given and endure faithfully throughout our lives. The scriptures are a foundation for knowledge of God. They reveal truths to us about life and our relationship with our fellow beings as well as our relationship to God.
The guidebook or manual brings us closer to God, brings about a state of cleanliness that ultimately will bring us back to God's presence.

I like the quote, epically the part about cleanliness. I think that scriptures and other council can also help us to be happy, answer questions and be comforted.

There is also a lot that can help us understand Jesus Christ and his mission better.

I strongly agree with the above quote. I think the purpose of scriptures is to educate the people that we are all humans made of flesh and blood and that we should not forget that there is a master above us....

The purpose of all organized religion has been, is , and always will be to control the masses. If you truelly want to get back to father creater of our souls you must choose love much more often than dominion and you must desire for all your worth to get back to father. that is the only way.
choose love,
ps judging is not love, judging is dominion.
