Please be careful - some of these fad diets are so silly and unhelpful in the long run, not to mention they don't keep the weight off permanently.
I've done the soup and vege diet,I've done the atkins diet and I've done the eating disorders. For me - they just didn't work and were more harmful than good. Much more harmful.
The soup and vege diet made me loose all my energy so I could hardly make it through a day at work.
Soup and veges are great for you though - but you need to have them mixed in with meats and fruits and yes, even carbs and a small amount of fats, to have a healthy diet.
I am now slim and very happy with my weight. All it takes are these four easy things:
1) eat regular meals at regular times (don't skip breakfast)
2) eat meals which include all of the foodgroups (if you don't you are likely to start craving the things you have cut out and then have big snack attacks in the middle of the night on the things you weren't meant to be eating!)
3) eat smaller portion sizes (forget supersize, order small sizes as the smalls are really not that small these days and once your stomach gets used to eating smaller amounts it shrinks and doesn't get as hungry - trust me, I hardly get hungry at all)
4) exercise - now I don't mean become a gym junkie, or even start running in the mornings. Just take stairs, walk to the corner store (don't drive), find some way of exercising that you enjoy but don't notice you are doing it (gardening, tennis, walk on the beach, a dance class).
By all means try the vege and soup thing, but I think you will find that like all the rest of us, we did it, it worked for 2 weeks, you become lethargic and have cravings, and then end up going back to your old ways.
The four things that I mentioned are much easier to do, don't produce cravings and is a life sustainable change for GOOD.
GOOD LUCK =)

Special K is a great cereal to try. Could have that with skim milk or soy milk which is healthier. If you are trying to lose that last 20, switching up your workout is great. I have been using a program by Tamilee webb called "I want those abs" and "I want that body" to help lose the weight. Cutting down on your size of meals is what works best for the long run. Keep in mind when doing this, your stomach is the size of your fist. Take your time eating and start with a salad with any meal. If it takes you longer than 20 minutes to eat, you will notice you aren't as hungry. That's because your body sees 20 minutes as your fill time.

Diet of soup and vegetables: would work *temporarily* because you wouldn't be eating anything valuable aside from vitamins and water!
For this reason, you would most likely lose *muscle*, NOT FAT. Losing muscle rather than fat will slow your metabolism DOWN (rather than speeding it up) making your body more inclined to gain the weight back.
So, unless you want to diet for a lifetime (and since you only have to lose 20 pounds) don't do it.
Breakfast: other than cereal, try oatmeal. Everything having complex carbs would be fine, especially because it's the beginning of the day, your body needs fuel and it burns any sugar you'll give it.
Here it is what you need to do:
1) do weight training 2-3 times a week AND run every day for at least 20 minutes, keeping your heart beat above 125 (you'll build muscles and burn fats)
2) eat 6-7 times a day, each time around 275-300 calories (you'll speed your metabolism up)
3) eat LEAN proteins (that will take your cravings away and produce more heat):
You need to eat
a) SKIM dairy (excellent source of both high value proteins and calcium, which you need to keep your body LEAN)
b) lean meats: chicken turkey fish and game
c) nuts soy tofu and oily fish (protein sources that also are sources of essential fatty acids which your body need to survive!)
d) other sources of proteins: beans and legumes
4) choose organic food preferably (has a higher content of essential fats, which keep you lean!)
5) drink at least 2 lt (1 gallon) of water a day (help melt the fat) and green tea (help burn fat)
6) use sweeteners rather than simple sugar
7) use whole organic cereals, oat, grains
8) take protein powders (whey after exercise and milk before sleeping) to enhance your muscular mass
Please remember that different body types react in different ways to low carbs vs low fat... for example, for ectomorphs low carbs is a BIG no no... for endomorphs, low fat is a big no no, so do things accordingly (ie: try and see what works for you!).

Instead of parsnips, swedes and potatoes, try shredding some greens in the pot along with carrots and onions, also to make a change tip a tin of tomatoes in. Keep your exercising up, swimming is an excellent help in burning the calories. You will lose weight, just keep at it, even if one week you feel you should have lost more. If you can find the packets of dried French Onion soup (not the tins of Cream Of Onion soup) add that too, it gives the soup a lovely flavour. Good Luck .

A diet of soup and vegetables may work as long as the soup is healthy. Here's a great breakfast:
1 scoop of whey/soy protein
1 scoop of powdered oatmeal
1 banana
3-5 frozen strawberries
1-1.5 cups of water
Mix all together in a blender and drink.

Fruit is always good also, cantelope, grapefruit etc...
As far cereals I like raisin bran or the flakes with honey.
Add some banana slices or some rasberries for some extra flavor and a bit more fruit of course.

You can have soup for breakfast or a bowl of oatmeal or cold cereal (whole grain) with fat free milk.
