1. It is too easy for someone to come into this country, get a job, get housing, get health care, etc. legally.

2. It is too hard for someone to get a work visa to come here and work legally, which probably leads to 1.

If we send landlords to jail for renting to illegal immigrants, and send employers to jail for hiring them, our illegal immigration problem will be solved in, say, a month.

This is a very good topic, and you may use what you need.

The obvious answer that everyone seems to give is the illegal immigrants we have crossing over the border every day, and it seems that our presidents solution is to create a wall and that should stop it. I think not. A better solution would be to toughen the criminal penalty once a person is caught transporting illegal immigrants. Return all immigrants to the country they are caught crossing before they entered. Even if a person is caught trying to sneak in from Europe or Asia through any US airport. Just send them back. Except when it comes to refugees that a totally different topic.

For those individuals that are in the US at this moment illegally there should be an immigration reform/ amnesty. That would allow them to obtain legal residence in the US. It should come with a lot of restrictions that should include an extensive back ground check. If the person does not meet the criteria then they are not eligible for legal status in the US and should be placed in deportation proceedings immediately.

Bottom line is that the US is in a critical time right now with its immigration laws and the out of control crossing of illegal immigrants. We are in need of a reform and that is the only way we will be able to legalize those that are here and have been here for years and minimize the number of illegal immigrants. That is my point of view.

America was born from immigrant's, other than true American Indians we are all immigrant's to some extent, all i have to say is that it is prejudiced, racist and hypocritical against humanity, to think that others should not be allowed the rights our ancestors cherished and fought for, personally i don't spit on graves stone's. America is the fastest growing country in the world, and it started a refuge for foreigners if you chop of the roots the plant will die. Immigrants our America's water and keep it growing, but every plant needs to be trimmed now and then and over feeding killed the cat.

You have many good answers. But heres my 2 cents.
Theres those who hires illegals, have them work 6
mo. while waiting for there pay until the crops are
sold. then a weak before payday the boss calls INS.
6mo free labor. That boss should go to jail.He knew!
As a rule it is almost imposable to judge if the
papers are bogus. Some can fool INS. I see no way
that it would be OK to hold a boss or landlord
responsible. Then it was mentioned that an illegal
mows your yard and trims trees. He falls out of a
tree braking legs and arm. Gos to the hospital ER.
The bill gos to $50,000 or more. That cheats the
tax payer. The poor worker blamed. The home owner
sits back and wont turn it into his Homeowners
insurance co. Just who is the crook here? He may
not know that he can sue, which is some homeowners
only concern. Who cares if he can't work for another
8 mo? Good Luck.....

Assuming your are referring to the problems of people coming into our country without documentation or the fact that we are allowing so many folks to come into our country as has never been done before? Then there is the concern that 50% of our LEGALLY immigrated people are Mexicanos and the other 50% are from the rest of the planet is questionable in my mind as being unfair and inequitable.

Current number of immigration legally detail that if this amount is continued, the population of the USA will be 4 times what it is today, by the year 2020.
This could spell a huge problem in any number of different ways. I think it spells a disaster in the form of overpopulation.

Where will the houseing, fuel for heat and transp. come from? Who/how will we properly educate people in these numbers who don't speak English?
Who is going to survive this and pay for it?
Crime and drug statistics indicate that there are very large increases in these areas that are getting worse and doing more harm to society. How will this be handled by our government, who obviously can't or won't control flow of illegal folks across our borders?
The future looks pretty bleak for the USA at this time. These concerns are not going to go away over night.

Assuming they go away at all, ...if not get worse.

America is dependent on immigration today. It's not just the tired old saw about immigrants doing jobs American's won't do. It's that there aren't enough Americans to keep the nation's system running smoothly.

In the 1930, a number of social programs were implemented in the hopes of boosting the economy, and they've been perpetuated on the grounds of social justice and simple fairness. The biggest of these is Social Security, which transfers income from young workers to older retirees.

Thing is, over the last 70 years, life spans have been extended, while, over the last 40, fertility rates have dropped in the US. Obviously, this puts a strain on Social Security, but it also impedes the 'growing economy' model - which depends in part upon continuous population growth - that the US counts on for it's prosperity. With native US fertility below replacement, the population should be dropping.

It's not, it's growing - entirely because of immigration. Without immigration, the economy would go into recession, and schemes like Social Security would implode.

The only reason we have enough immigrants to shore up our population is that millions of them are willing to break immigration laws to come here. That the laws on the books don't allow for enough immigration to serve US interests is absurd, but it's such a difficult issue that it's not surprising.

There are a number of interests that fuel illegal immigration, especially from Mexico. For one thing, the people who leave Mexico for the US face poor economic prospects and even racial descrimination (in the US, we tend to think of all hispanics as being a single race - such is not the case, in Mexico there is a clear line between those of primarily european descent, and those with more native blood, who are called 'mestizos') at home. For another, nativists in America resist the idea of increased immigration (and, again, racism is sometimes involved in that). So there's pressure on the immigrants to leave, and preassure in the US for laws to stop them from coming.

However, it gets even more complicated. The political parties in America both have strong motives to allow illegal immigration to continue. The Democrats see high volumes of illegal immigrants from 'hispanic' countries to be votes in the bank - even if they do not become citizens, thier children will, and the expectation is that as 'minorities' they will tend to vote Democratic. The Republicans see the same flow of illegals as cheap labor for thier corporate constituents - labor that's cheap specifically becaus it is illegal, and thus not subject to legal protection.

In summary: America desperately needs immigrants.

Nativists don't want them, so laws restrict immigrations.

Both political parties /do/ want them, even (or especially) if they're illegal, so those laws go virtually un-enforced.

How about showing some statistics on americans killing americans, americans in prison and so forth.
Where do you people come up with these ideas about illegals getting welfare? Its upsurd.
As for how much EIC these immigrants got you lost credibilty right there. They were immigrants, meaning they paid taxes and they earned that money back. Again paying into social security which will probably be gone by the time any of us ever get to the age to receive it.

You just want opinions and I've got one, there ARE immigration issues besides the illegals...just look back at 9/11/01...legal immigrants who were trained right here by our own nationals, came to destroy and were allowed to because there is no effective policing of what you can or cannot do once you're in.

Regarding illegal immigrants, we have serious issues which are bound to become worse if left unchecked, but I think the solutions to that have been addressed by others before me here: Punish everyone that is involved, including landlords and employers.

As far as "the outcome"... I firmly believe it's not going to improve because of the abundance of liberal objections from those who pretend to be more humanitarian than the rest.

Do you mean immigration or illegal aliens? I don't see any immigration issues. Immigration accounts for the reason most Americans are here--most voluntary, some involuntary. There are no immigration issues.

If we are a Nation of Laws then we also need to be a Nation of Law Enforcement. Without law enforcement, we become a nation of criminals and corruption. People who enter the country illegally, for whatever reason, are criminals. They are lawbreakers. When illegals come here, they break more than one law -- they break fraud statutes, identity statutes, and numerous others. They promote organized crime, especially with such large numbers of them coming in. When they are hired by businesses and corporations, these corporations and businesses are aiding and abetting illegal acts and are contributing to organized crime. If you will put the illegal immigrant problem into perspective, you will understand that we have 12-20 million lawbreakers residing in this country today. If they are all working, we have an additional 12 million or more lawbreakers who are aiding and abetting these criminals. They are contributing to the delinquency of our children and teaching our children that they don't have to obey any laws they disagree with. When our government gives them sanctuary or fails to prosecute them, it enforces their belief in the right to disobey the laws and demand rewards for doing so. The outcome of this can be nothing good.

Use whatever you like. Go to the La Raza, MeCHA, Aztlan websites and the websites of some of these illegla immigrant support groups and then look at some of Luis Gonzales's and Senator Dick Durbin's speeches regarding giving and giving to illegal immigrants and then look up the definition of treason and tell us all how treason is good for the country, its image or its law abiding citizens.

Immigrants made this country what it is today, and if we aren't careful, they will make it a mess, soon.

Give me your tired and poor, no more.

Your huddled masses yearning to be free, nope, keep them huddled someplace else, please.

We don't need immigrants in this country anymore, when we were first forming as a nation, we needed bodies, we needed people to keep us strong and diverse. Yet, that diversity is what is forcing us to accomodate to anyone and everyone that claims citizenship (whether legally or otherwise) in the USA.

A teacher of mine in high school once said that America is not a melting pot, it is more like a (to quote Elaine) Big Salad really. We are not one big happy family, we are many sub families which call ourselves a family of Americans, but go shopping lately and within five minutes, here in South Florida anyway, you will hear about six languages spoken - and rarely English. We are not one community, and we will never be if we keep separating ourselves in these little groups and sub-sections.

I am all for immigrants, but, please at least try to adapt to your surroundings, at least pretend that you care about America - pretend to learn English, pretend to be patriotic about your new country, not your old one. I think what made the Nazis loathe the Jews so much, or at least they used this as rhetoric, was their disgust that the Jews failed to adapt, they failed to "melt" and we saw how that worked out.

There are many, many Americans out West who think what is happening right now is a righteous cause for a civil conflict to force people to adapt. Think of it like a teenager, give them an inch and they take a mile. I am not asking my "teenager" (read, immigrants) to lose their identity, but please, respect the house rules, at least on the surface. Like so many causes of violence and conflict, whether physical or otherwise, it comes down to respect. Respect is something I feel a lot of immigrants fail to grasp.

So, let us remember that while you are in our country, you are our guests, if you are illegal guests, then you need to become legal, I pay taxes, not that I want to, but I have to, it is disrespectful to receive moneys from others (from a tax pool) when I won't put any money into that same pot.

If you are legal immigrants, I only ask that respect that your new country, that is all. No one, to the best of my knowledge, held a gun to your head and told you to come to the USA.

I guess my opinion may sound harsh, but it is just this perception I have lately, I am surrounded (in my complex) by all these people clearly not from the USA. It is not just Hispanics, it is Eastern Europeans, Hatians, Hispanics, and Arabs. I guess my question, personally, is what the hell is happening to my United States?

I just have one request, please at least TRY to learn English if you are going to be a permanent citizen here, that's all I want.

You can quote me if you like, I never tire of spouting my views.
