I have 2 children ages 3 & 4. I don't know what I'll do when they are at the ages where they want to pick out there own costumes. So far I've dressed my daughter as a ladybug, princess, and a pink poodle. My son has been batman, and a football player. I don't see letting them dress in anything that I feel is morally wrong, or that may go against our family beliefs. Halloween may be one of those holidays that celebrate weird things, but for me, it's a time for my kids to enjoy being kids, having fun, and being happy.

I would never allow my kids to dress as:
Jesus
Nazi
Osama bin laden
Charles Manson
KKK person
anything cute, such as a ladybug or butterfly (I have BOYS)
They've never worn the cheap department store costumes.
Every year since they were little, I've allowed them to skip school on Trick-or-Treat night so that we could do full-scale horror make-up. We do the airbrushing and prosthetics. This costs a fortune and takes hours, but it never fails to thrill me when the boys gross someone completely out because we've done a convincing amputation or missing eye. We've even won contests for well placed knives and bullet wounds. Gruesome, yes. But costumes are the best part of Halloween.

I'm a non-believer and know the pagan history of the Celtic version of the festival of the dead.
I can teach my kid the seriousness/reverence the original Celts felt, but let him dress as what he wants, given it's fun for him and nothing I could find that would cause any danger. Rght now, that would be a Star Wars character which has nothing to do with the Celts. Sigh
Not, though?-I don't like hunting. Something in camoflauge? ;-)

i'm a witch, and my kids have always dressed as they wanted, whether it was a turtle, a barbie doll, a vampire, witch, lion, barney the dinosaur, a dead cheerleader, a fluffy bunny run over by a mack truck, a ghost or a dead grandpa (the dead grandpa won at school for best costume!)
we celebrate the true meaning of the sabbat at our samhain ritual before or after the actual date, and trick or treat with the kids on halloween night

Since my girls are 3 and 5, I'd dress them appropriately, with no scary themes involved. For one, they don't like scary stuff like witches and ghosts and monsters. For two, I would not let them dress in something that was not modest.
A pimp or prostitute? Never. That simply isn't appropriate for their age, they don't even understand what that is.
Besides, they WANT to be fairy princesses and such; they want to be Dora the Explorer and Tinkerbell and Cinderella.

I wouldn't let them dress up as a ghost of a witch since that's lame and over done.
