I think every school campus should have a military-trained armed guard who is trained to aggressively attack an active gunman.

Also, every classroom should have a strong door that locks.

Of future school shootings?. Is there a schedule that I missed?. Let's talk about the barbecue we're going to have as soon as it warms up.

While the school can have policies in effect that prohibit weapons from being in campus housing, they cannot prevent all incidents of violence by those who are clearly disturbed and bent on harming any and all that happen to be innocently in their line of fire.

The administration at VA TECH did as well as they could when the unconscionable and unpredictable occured. They called in the local authorities, the state authorities and the feds all in a very short time.

It is always easier to say what should have been done after the fact but this isn't a prison the gunman broke into it was an open campus where everyone could pass through and in particular the gunman who WAS A STUDENT and had all of the proper credentials to be on campus.

Sadly, we no longer live in a Mayberry like world and people are no longer connected to their neighbors so it leaves room for those who are seeking to do evil an open opportunity.

That would be expensive and create an 'armed camp' feel that would probably be less than conducive to education - to gaurd against an astronomically rare eventuality. Though, if a school does have paid security, they should be trained to deal with such a rampage, in the highly unlikely event that one occurs. It might also help (judging from one survivor account), to have two exits from every class room and doors that can be locked, from the inside, without a key.

Another thing that occured to me, though, is that one reason the massacre was so successful seemed to be a lack of, well, heroism. That's not a criticims - heroism is not something you can expect or count on, it's something extraordinary. The shooter was gunning down whole classrooms - groups of 20+ peolpe, with a weapon that couldn't hold even 20 bullets - and shooting people three and more times each. This is with guns that fire one bullet per pull of the trigger, and would need to be reloaded maybe two or three times in the course of slaughtering a class room. But, no one jumped him, at least, not successfully.

It may be that VT - a school far from the violence of the big city, a 'gun free zone,' a /safe/ place, in other words - attracted students, faculty, and even security, who were simply unprepared (perhaps psychologically incapable of being prepared) to deal with acts of extreme violence in any effective way.

Whether you have an armed officer on campus or not...the officer still has to respond from one end of campus to another. That won't decrease the response time to address an armed combatant.

Having a well planned contingency plan in place is the best bet. Under the circumstances, I think the local and campus police did the best they could at the time. The community wasted no time calling in the FBI and ATF as well. This stands on its own merit that planning was in effect.

It's easy to "Monday morning quarterback" and more planning will take place in the near future!

Best protection against this type of issue is to be vigilant. Always be aware of your surroundings, have a plan of escape or action, and report any suspicious activity or behavior!

Best wishes.

theres lots of sick people out there.

the pattern here is that all these killers are outsiders people who are humiliated by society put down and become obsessed with their failure so much that they hold a grudge and in the end want to make a statement even if they take their own life. Like this recent one hes going to go on the books as the deadliest school killing in the use he was looking for fame recognition even if it meant death of himself and others. I feel sorry for them and their invisible role on this society but the thing is why not help them. Like his creative writing teacher said he had a weird imagination why not pay close attention to this.

I think that things wont change and it wouldnt surprise me in the next 10 yrs if not sooner to hear of 60 or 100 people dead. The media advertises these things to sale the news but they dont know how some viewers may take these news at home living the same invisible life as these killers.

But hopefully we do get more security in schools

I think it's so sad when we have to resort to having police or military at the doors of our schools, just because of some nut jobs that can't settle their disputes without guns! Don't get me wrong, I don't like violence, but why shoot an unarmed man, that's the chicken way out. Anyway, yes I think they should at least have metal detectors at the doors, and a security guard there at all times. They should also have some kind of dress code, not uniforms exactly, but like the see through backpacks, no purses, and no clothes you can be able to hide guns in. Anyway that's my idea.

The bad guys prefer unarmed victims!!.
When seconds matter calling 911 and asking the bad guy to wait is not a viable option.

Better to have a gun and not need it than to need it and not have it!!!
**Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens.**

So you are against the private ownerships of gun! Do you believe in fire extinguishers? Why, you can always call the fire department!!

being waiting to stay in a loose society has it is intense downfalls, nevertheless i does not supply up my freedom for secure practices, because of the fact it is been shown time and time lower back that it will no longer paintings. If we would initiate retaining mothers and dads to blame for their youngster's strikes and initiate inflicting harsher sentences it would desire to help shrink the the particularly some difficulty. yet we additionally might desire to undergo in recommendations that with each and every of the media interior the international we can hear extra with regard to the "undesirable" issues than good, and we would desire to continually take that into attention. undesirable habit and adverse judgment have been occurring for a protracted time.

I don't know the laws in Virginia. However, here in Texas even if one is licensed to carry a concealed weapon (s)he is prevented by law from possessing one on school property. I find this to be ridiculous.

As with other incidents of this sort, if there had been but one of the victims who was a properly equipped CHL holder it is likely that the casualty rate would have been significantly lower.

That would help but most police won`t even get into a shoot out situation until a SWAT or ETF team is called , so you would need to find some guards with guts to make that work.
