I called 911 because there was a telephone pole shooting sparks from it. I told them that there was a telephone pole shooting alot of sparks and it smelled like something burning. They sent someone for an oder in the house, so the 911 person didn't hear the call right. A friend said that I called the wrong number, I should have called the electric company. I said 911 is an emergency number for emergencies, not just for medical reasons am I right or is 911 for medical reasons only.?

WOW!!! So many people, so many terrible answers.

112 is NOT a worldwide emergency number, it the emergency number for several countries in Europe and that's it.....

If you see a telephone pole arcing like you did, then you did the right thing by calling 911. It is a fire department issue just as much as an electric department issue. And the fire department will contact the electric company.

911 is only for emergency phone calls. The minute you call in you could block some other individuals life in danger.
You should always have some important phone numbers next to your phone.

Electricity = the company that deals with electricity
Gas company = gas ruptures
Sheriff county = for other specific emergeny's

So start doing that and 911 will be more effective.

911 is for any emergency. If you're not sure if it's an emergency or not, you're still advised to call 911 - just to be on the safe side.

It's also for police & fire. I would imagine the fire department would be interested in that case. You would want to call the electric company too, though.
