Check with the secretary of state, BBB,

Make sure they are 501(3) c and have a valid tax id number.

Check with their local animal shelter. I can give you several shelters that will give me dogs at anytime and even transport them to me on behalf of the organization I have worked with for years. Check with their vets offices.

Remember any reputable rescue truly trying to curtail the euthanasia rate will not allow any animal of any age to get adopted without being spayed or neutered. We will take in anything if we have a foster including pot bellies and bunnies and they are also spayed and neutered and everything else our vets recommend to get them on a healthy start

Remember they can say whatever they want you have to check the facts. I am very happy to see you being concerned. I get so frustrated people saying they "adopted" or "rescued" a pet when in fact their money only went towards increasing the pet population through inept rescues and backyard rescues. Yes they have now succumbed to backyard rescues - everyone wants to "help" However in most cases they are not helping.

You should never pay for more than vetting. Our adoption fee is $100.00 for most every dog. That includes HW testing, shots deworm spay neuter and microchip 30 days pet insurance and a gaurantee we have been here and will be here if anything ever happens and you have to return the pet.

Good question. For the most part, rescues are unregulated. Some of the worst ones have the best websites. Some rescues are 501c3, which is a tax status where donations can be deductable. Ask a lot of questions. If the rescue has a lot of purebred puppies, it's a red flag. Ask a lot of questions. A good rescue has nothing to hide. A good rescue will ask you a lot of questions too. They will probably do a homevisit. They want to make sure the animals go to a good. home. Animals will be healthy, fixed and temperment tested. A good rescue stands behind their animals. If you have a problem or question, you should be able to contact them for help.

It's tough to do. Making personal connections is the best way to do it. Go to thier events, ask lots of questions about policies and procedures, attend a volunteer orientation session, talk with others in the animal welfare industry, etc.

I think I remember you saying that you are from MN. I'd be happy to answer questions you have about local groups. I've been working in the animal welfare industry in the Cities for 8 years and have a pretty good handle on who's who. It's tough and it changes ALL the time.

Great question. No. Just because people are on Petfinder doesn't make them reputable. I know a couple puppymill brokers there. If you deal with a rescue, ask a lot of questions. Make sure they spay and neuter animals BEFORE they adopt them out. No good rescue adopts fertile dogs. Make sure the dogs are vetted. Unfortunately online no one knows you're a dog.........
