David from his youth believed God & adored God. He spent years alone with the sheep out in the fields where he prayed, praised, played music, & composed songs to glorify God. His love for God was never quenched & in his heart he had a true, sincere desire to please God. Because of this relationship, he is admired as one of the greatest kings of the world. God gave him strength & blessings as long as David had fellowship with God. When David sinned, God let him know about it......and David didn't put off getting back in God's good graces. He never berated God for withdrawing from him because of his sins, instead, he humbled himself & saught God's forgiveness, and readily accepted any consequences God handed out (even when God took his son, David knew it was because of his own sin). David, unlike many of us, was always eager to do God's will & he didnn't spend time over spilt milk. Each day is a new beginning with God and David always made the most of it. As you look at David's life, you don't ever see any doubt about who God is and the deity of God. I expect that would go a long way with God. David was a unique person in that way....He truly got to know who God is out in those fields with the sheep. Oh how I wish we all could catch a bit of the confidence he had in God as a young shepherd when he came into Saul's camp of soilders who trembled at the voice of the Philistine giant, Goliath. For David, it was a no-brainer. Why does everyone fear the enemy of God's chosen? What place does fear have under the protection of the mighty God of Israel"? Can you imagine his indignation that these big, trained soiders of Israel were afraid of God' enemy? You see, David knew God because he spent time with God....he knew the character of God....he knew God loved & protected those who obey Him....& with the faith of innocent youth, David didn't hesitate to face that giant because David saw through the eyes of God how insignificant that giant was compared to his God. He put his trust in God to defeat that giant. Can you capture the relationship here? Oh, that we all could be that close to the Father. It is something to desire for sure.

Ooh - I just read this the other night in Acts (Ch.12 or 13 - sorry I'm not sure which)!!
It was stated that David was considered a man after God's Own Heart because David would do anything God told him to do.

The word "after" is often misunderstood and taken out of context. The word "after" is closely related to "pursue", not "likeness". David did something that king Saul did not do, which is why God chose him as king. David went to get the Ark of the Covenant and set it up as the center of worship that God would get the praise and glory. This is why David was a man after God's own heart. He pursued the goal of seeing God being lifted up among the people. What was the heart of God? To give his only Son for the salvation of man kind. This is what the Ark of the Covenant represented the coming of Christ, who is a demonstration of the heart of God.

David probably thought about God in everything he did (as in wondering if it would be good for God or not). So wanting to know what God wanted him to do, probably shows that he was after God's "will" or "heart." He obviously wasn't perfect and made mistakes, but it doesn't change the fact that he obviously pleased God above many others of his time.

Because He knew His love . He learned it while he spent time with the sheep, and protecting them from bears and lions at a very early age, with His help. Then i think David saw really clearly about our relationship with our Shepard.
David learned how to do his part, and let God make His. Like in the story with Goliath - he made himself available to God to destroy that giant...and experienced a tremendous victory.
He poured out his heart and mind in front of God,like in front of a friend (Psalms)..and he had a close relationship..friendship with God.

Because the Biblical god is also a polygamist who secretly has sexual relations with other men the way David did with Jonathan.

Because He tried his best to follow and when he sinned he came to God asking for forgiveness relying on God's grace.

Jesus said Lot was a righteous man, and Lot offered his daughters to a rape mob, and then got plastered and impregnated both of them.
So much for God's standards.
Mine are infinitely better.

David had great faith. God had already helped David kill a bear and a lion and David knew that a giant named Goliath was no problem for his God.
Without faith, it is impossible to please God. David had great faith.
