It's simply popular because it humorously illustrates just how ridiculous, arbitrary, nonsensical and mindless all theisms are. And it also gives theists the chance to experience how we feel about their beliefs. The way they react to the FSM is exactly how we atheists react to their silly and unsupportable claims. And frankly, belief in a spaghetti monster is not any more silly and insensate than belief in the Trinity, virgin birth and resurrection of the dead, let alone demons and angels and wars in heaven.

I would have to say a personal God. His noodly appendage can be felt in all we do.
But since I'm not a midgit, I'd say the FSM is less personal than he used to be (due to increased world population, of course). We can't all be touched by His noodly appendage all the time.
