This brings to mind one of my favorite quotes -
"People often fear what they don't understand and often hate what they fear"
A little understanding can go a long way, but many people are too willing to let the media spoon-feed them information than go out and spend 15 minutes actually looking something up for themselves.
EDIT: I would like to congratulate Primoa for offering a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Our motto is not "Convert or Die", you're confusing that with the early Christian Missionaries in the Far East and Indonesia.

Even with your comments (which I agree with) so many immediate hateful responses. This is the type of mindset that I can step back and look at then understand how the Nazi's did what they did. Don't fly off the handle at this remark. I'm just saying that I can see how a group or mob mentality develops about certain ideas or groups of people and then spirals out of control. The reason there is as much Christianity in the world now is because of the "believe what I believe or die" mentality that fueled the inquisition and the crusades. If you read the Bible in the same way you read the Koran, there is just as much violence, calls for murder and death and single mindedness as you can find in the Koran.
One example:
Kill the Entire Town if One Person Worships Another God
Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. "The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him." (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)
I could go on, but I know it gets to be overwhelming. I'll add a link if you're interested in reading similar verses from the Bible.
NOTE: I'm an Atheist, so maybe I can more clearly see the similarities between the two faiths. I don't have my own faith in one or the other to cloud my objectivity. I realize that neither one is good or evil but either can be exploited by those who want to use it to gain power and control.

In order to convey the message of Islam, dialogue and debate become
inevitable. The Glorious Qur’an says:
“Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord, with wisdom and beautiful
preaching, and argue with them in ways that are best and most
gracious!”
[Al-Qur’an 16:125]
In conveying the message of Islam to a non-Muslim, it is usually not sufficient to
highlight only the positive nature of Islam. Most non-Muslims are not convinced
about the truth of Islam because there are a few questions about Islam at the
back of their minds that remain unanswered.
They may agree with your contentions about the positive nature of Islam. But,
in the same breath, they will say - “Ah! But you are the same Muslims who
marry more than one woman. You are the same people who subjugate women
by keeping them behind the veil. You are fundamentalists, etc.”
I personally prefer asking the non-Muslims upfront, with their limited
knowledge, whether right or wrong, from whichever source it may be, what they
feel is wrong in Islam. I encourage them to be very frank and open and convince
them that I can take criticism about Islam.
The common misconceptions about Islam arise in the minds of a majority of
non-Muslims, because they are constantly being bombarded with
misinformation about Islam. International media is mainly controlled by the
western world, whether it is international satellite channels, radio stations, news
papers, magazines or books. Recently the Internet has become a powerful
medium of information. Though it is not controlled by anybody, one finds a large
amount of virulent propaganda about Islam on the Internet. Of course, Muslims
too are utilizing this tool to portray the right image of Islam and Muslims, but
they are far behind as compared to the propaganda against Islam. I hope the
efforts by the Muslims will increase and continue to be pursued. The questions may change depending upon how Islam is projected by the
media.
One more thing I would like to add is that Hitler incinerated 6 million jews, can we belame christianity for that. One should never judge a religion by its followers, the only authentic source for judging Islam are The Quran & The Sahih Hadith.
As for convert or die I would like to quote an article in Reader’s Digest ‘Almanac’, year book 1986, gave the statistics of
the increase of percentage of the major religions of the world in half a century
from 1934 to 1984. This article also appeared in ‘The Plain Truth’ magazine. At
the top was Islam, which increased by 235%, and Christianity had increased
only by 47%. May one ask, which war took place in this century which converted
millions of people to Islam? Or Which sword is forcing people in the West to accept
Islam in such large numbers?
With which sword was Islam spread? Even if Muslims had it they could not use
it to spread Islam because the Qur’an says in the following verse:
“Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from
error”
[Al-Qur’an 2:256]

If Islam is in fact the "religion of peace" than where was the outcry from the Islamic people of the U.S. after, the USS COLE, WORLD TRADE CENTERS,and the Madrid Bombings. Hush, that's all we heard, not a peep. Dancing in the streets of Afghanistan. Do you really believe Christians would be dancing in the streets if Pres. Bush dropped a bomb that wiped 3300 innocent Muslims off the face of the planet, no, they would have him run out on a rail, he would certainly be no Marter. Islam is no religion, it is a murderous cult and until the Muslim leaders in the world stand up and protest the terrorist state of their so called religion, you will not change my mind.
Sorry, I lost family in 9/11 this really hits home.

Yes, I have read the Qur'an.
All of my criticisms of Islam (as well as the positive things) are completely founded. I have several Muslim friends and actually own an electronic copy of the entire English, French, and Arabic Qur'an.

I don't hate Muslims, I hate Islam. The more research I do on the Quran, the Hadiths, and other sources, the more I hate Islam. I don't hate the Muslim people.

First of all - I'm a Christian - a follower of Jesus Christ and His teachings. Secondly - I don't hate Muslims - in fact I pray for them. They are lost though - plain and simple.
God loves them and so do I - but they are lost - without Jesus Christ - the Only Way to Heaven - they will be lost for eternity in a placed called Hell - plain and simple.
If there are negative comments about Islam - that is because they are negative and bringing it upon themselves - not because we did anything. They preach hatred and violence and that is why there is so much negativism towards them. Not our fault!!!
