I saw the tip i am going to give you from a fishing show. It is a wonderful tip and i have been using it.

Get a small cooler and fill it with ice and water and put the worms in without the dirt. This will keep them very active through out the day and you wont make a mess because there is no dirt.

good luck

Sand worms are from Maine, yet you will find blood and sand worms as far south as New Jersey. After a week, there is really no use in keeping them anymore. They get moldy and lifeless. To try to squeeze out maybe a couple of extra days out of blood-worms, I put fresh seaweed and sea grass in the same plastic bag holding the worms. Then I put the worms in a cool, dark place in the refrigerator.

Clearly if he's still alive, just keep doing whatever it is you have been doing. Not entirely sure what he's been eating, but he sure has found something. I don't think that something as small as a worm could change the PH or anything. Good luck keeping the little guy alive!

Put them on a substrate (a pasty porrige mix is good), put in a suitable container and keep in a cool box or bag.
