You do not have to know the bible inside out. What is important is to practice the teaching of Jesus i.e. LOVE. Jesus never said that we must study the Bible, His commands are LOVE God, and LOVE one another. However, one reads the bible to help us to live good lives.
I spend 5 minutes reading the bible (usually a parable or miracle from the Gospel) and 15-25 min of reflecting on it.

Everyone starts sometime. There is no need to feel bad, or let others make us feel bad. Your friend seems to be quite knowledgeable...but keep in mind, that even the devil knows the words of God, and better than we do. After all, who do you think created satan?!!!!!
Don't let others intimidate you. By taking your time, and reading the Bible each day, you will gain knowledge that stays with you, and you will be surprised at how quickly you will learn.
Pray for wisdom and knowledge.

I try to balance reading the Bible with the other LDS scriptures (the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine & Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price).
Fortunately, our Sunday School class is currently on Matthew and the other Gospels so that helps too.
Throughout my day I spend about two hours with the scriptures.

I used to spend 20 minutes in the morning and 30-60minutes at night before falling asleep.
I now only spend a few minutes each day, but do so with a completely different perspective.

I try to read from The Holy Bible everyday, but I don't time myself. I would guess an average of 1/2 an hour. I always feel like I should devote more time too. I don't think you should compare yourself to other people though. It doesn't accomplish anything. Do what is right for you and your faith in God.
May God Bless you.

I do a Bible Study Mon.-Fri. with a radio pastor for 30 mins. So the reading part only takes a few minutes, then he does his teaching. Don't feel like you have to compete with your friend you just have to work out what works for you.
