i get annoyed at things like that too. i don't do things to expect anything in return, but it SHOULD be common courtesy to say "Thank you". I say it, what is so hard about it that no one else seems to know those words.
i also hate when you hold the door open for them, and they of course walk right through it as if that was your job, then the rest of their family/friends/small city's worth of people walking by them, just walk right in, leaving you holding the door. i am not a doorman. i do not get paid to hold the door for others, i do it to be courteous, but no one seems to care about that anymore. it's really quite sad.
i've gotten to the point where if i don't hear a thank you, i will say YOU ARE VERY WELCOME, in hopes they will learn they are to say thank you.

I am with Isadora, it is very disturbing. Basically, what you are accusing people of is self absorption. However, you are doing a very simple act of opening a door, and are expecting in return. I guess I question your self centerdness to expect a reaction to something so basic as opening a door. The self absorption is the very problem I find most troubling about people in the us society today. sigh

You are not supposed to do a good deed with the expectation of getting a reward, you do it because it is in you. Slamming the door on the woman's husband takes away ALL of the good deeds you have done.

I sympathize with you.
Every day I battle this aggravation on the road, letting people into my lane and they don't wave "thank you", holding doors open for people that don't even acknowlede that the door just didn't open by itself at their command!
Sometimes I will respond to someone I hold the door open to by saying loudly, "You're welcome!" I suppose that beats cussing at them!
I know I am a good person. I know I am courteous and considerate. I was raised that way. I just have to come to grips with this reality of today's world. We live in a society where most people think it's all about "them". I often want to rename Los Angeles to "ME, California."

So you're holding doors open for people soley to get recognition for doing so, and not to be nice? What's worse is that you slammed the door on someone because their wife (not themself) didn't thank you.

There is nothing wrong in doing what you are talking about (I mean holding the door.....) but let us do it without the expectation of any returns! After all, all fingers are not the same!

I paid for part of someone's groceries once b/c they were short of cash, only about 5$, no thank you either.
The cashier said something about to the customer, but they just walked away.
Some people are just rude.
What goes around....

Keep doing what you are doing and remember, what goes around comes around.
When you are standing at the pearly gates, God will thank you by letting you in.
Keep it up some of us do appreciate it.

Wow. That was rude.
Is this really your biggest problem?
It isn't anything personal. Take some joy in the fact that you are being kind and then let it go.
