A commercial plane is any plane that is for hire. It can be a Cessna or a Boeing 747. If you have to pay to put someone or something on it, then it is a commercial plane. Like the one above me said, it doesn't have to make money.

Any platform that conforms to the FAR/AIM Part 135.25 flight operations.

Basically, any aircraft could be concievably be a commerical airplane or aircraft, provided the pilot has his commerical rating and the aircraft is operated under Part 135.
This could include aircraft as small or smaller than a J-3 Cub all the way up to the AN-225.

HAHA just had to interject... while most of you are correct in the fact that it is any airplane used with the INTENT of financial gain... That "intent" word is very important... I was recently on a red-eye DC-9 flight that had 8 people on it... yes 8!... You cant tell me that the DC-9 was not a commercial airplane, but you also cant tell me that they made money on that run...
