My son is going to be 2 in June. Anyway, lately he's been really bad for having fits. His latest is he drags me to the baby gate because he wants to goto the basement. NO idea why. It's messy and he NEVER goes down there. But everyday he has a fit to go down there, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. Usually I just ignore his fit.. I try to get him busy with something and comfort him which does NOT work. But I don't give in and he eventually gives it up. But it's HARD. I want to give in just so he'll stop, but I got to tell myself no otherwise he'll have fits more often. How to others deal with fits?

You say he "never" goes down there, it could be that he simply wants to see what is down there. Would it take THAT much time out of your ever busy schedule to pick him up and carry him into the basement so that he can see what is down there? Maybe he is scared and wants to be sure there is nothing harmful down there. This isn't "giving in" this is SHOWING him just what is down there. I'm just wondering WHY there is only a child gate there and not a closed door. That would more than likely end the curiosity because that is just what this problem is.

You're dealing really well. These fits will last a while because he can't communicate really well and it's frustrating for him. It's also frustrating because you control what he can and can't have. It's normal.

If it's the same thing all the time, you may want to take him down there to discover the fascination. Maybe there's just something he saw and wants.

Maybe he just like the stairs. Lots of kids that age love stairs. Stairs are good for building large motor skills also.
