Who invented that one?

It's not what the christian brothers taught me as a kid.

It certainly is a Catholic teaching - check out the catechism link in my sources if you have any doubts. I would also guess the belief of many Protestant groups, too, since it is based on the Bible - 1 Peter 3:18-20. Christ descended into hell after crucifixion and before resurrection in order to free from sin those who died before His coming.

18 For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit.

19 In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison,

20 who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water.

Don't know when and where this came from. There is nothing in the Bible that says that Jesus went to hell. Besides according to the Bible hell is not a place, it is the eternal death of all who have sinned and not repented.

When Jesus cried upon the Cross, "Oh, Father, why have You forsaken Me?" it was then He was separated from the Father because of the sin poured out upon Him. As He gave up His spirit, He said, "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit." His suffering was completed in our stead. His soul/spirit went to the Paradise side of Hades. Jesus did not go to Hell. Jesus’ suffering ended the moment He died. The payment for sin was paid. He then awaited the resurrection of His body and His return to His glory in His ascension. Did Jesus go to Hell? No. Did Jesus go to Sheol / Hades? Yes.
