The family is the basic unit of society. A society is not a jungle-like construction. A community is based on clusters of cooperating family-members. Well functioning families preferably composed of parents and their own children may be the good ground pillars of a well-functioning society/community.

All the individual members and families of society should be treated as equally precious, as equally worth of further support, while those members that for some reason contribute most to the success of their society should be honored for their particular efforts.

My family of choice has superseded my family of origin. While the latter still has a special place in my heart, they are not the first ones I go to when I need help or wish to share good news. I think the overall concept of "the family" in the traditional sense, is over rated. What is important is that you have a support network of some sort. I don't believe that the family (again in the traditional sense of the word -- the nuclear family) is the primary unit of our society. Our country wasn't founded by families, it was founded by communities who could work together for the common good. Just my view of things.

My family is very important to me.

The family unit can benefit society in a number of ways. From the household, children are prepared (theoretically) to be a good neighbor. The child learns from the parents' example how to relate with neighbors and other members of the community.

The reason I say "neighbor" is this; as Muslims, we are taught by the sunnah of Muhammad (SAW) to be good to our neighbors. If our neighbor fears harm from us (Muslims), we are not considered good Muslims (may Allah save us from that).

My family is everything to me, there is nothing more important.
Not sure what you mean by "family unit", (I define it as people who may or may not live together, may or may not love each other, and may or may not be related by blood, adoption, or marriage - pretty broad) but having lifelong loved ones is very important to society, provides individuals with support and inner strength.

My biological family is not important to me. I have not seen any of them in the last decade. My family of friends that has grown over the years is far more important.

My family is of paramount importance. That is why I have to fight those who'd deny gay couples the right to marry.

As for the family unit and society, that depends on YOUR definition of soceiety anf family unit.

Depends on your definition of family unit. Do I think children need to be cared for until they are ready for society? Of course. I think children need love, encouragement, discipline, education.

I do not think that they need a tradition family unit or religion in their life to grow up to be decent hardworking intelligent people.
