That we should NOT amend the constitution to ban guns? I mean, personally, I don't own a gun because I don't feel I need one. But the choice is there for me if I wanted one. I have a choice. However, if we start messing around and amending the constitution to ban guns - that would scare me - because to me, that would mean they could amending it to eliminate our other rights. Does anyone else agree with me?

That's exactly one of my concerns: if guns are banned - the only ones will have them are the nutcases and criminals - so what's the point of banning them? The nut cases & criminals aren't going to say: "Oh, guns are banned, I better turn mine in". You know what I mean? Adults in this country know the pros and cons of owning a gun and should be allowed to make decisions for themselves. We shouldn't be treated like children who can't make responsible decisions. Like I said. I don't own one because I feel I don't need one - but who knows? Maybe 10 years from now, someone might break into my home and I might change my mind. I like knowing that the option is there for me. If we want to own a gun - fine. If we don't want one, that's fine do - but don't take away the right/choice.

I agree completely. I am a democrat and a gun owner. I am also a combat veteran, a taxpaying, law abiding citizen and I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to own a firearm. In fact, I blame the gun control lobby for yesterday's atrocity. By restricting the places where Americans can legally carry firearms, they've turned us all into herds of defenseless victims. Those students yesterday were like sheep to the slaughter, and it's absolutely tragic. In this example, the proof was in the pudding. The only person with a gun was the criminal. Hence, when you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. If they do make guns illegal for our "safety," then where does it end? Should they mandate that we all drive hybrids too? Should freedom of assembly be taken away, since people in groups make easier targets and are also more likely to riot? Should freedom of worship be taken away since religions are always competing for a finite number of "believers"?

When you remove "Guns" from the citizens, those citizens loose the right to rebel/revoke the power of the government.

The government is in power because the people have entered a legal contract with them - the Constitution.

Start taking away those rights - Guns, Jury nullifcation, etc - and you no longer have a Democratic Republic.

It is always a good thing when Dems, Libs, Cons, Neo-Cons, Pubs, Indies and Libies can all see those basics. That means those folks who understand it - know what the DOI and the COTUS is all about.

Well done!

The 2nd amendment is a provisional amendment, it is not an absolute.
"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
There are arguments that only people in the police dept. and state natl. guard should have guns.
Personally I think it should be harder to get a gun than it is to get a car, a gun has only one use, to kill, and target practice is just practicing to kill.
So, all guns should be licensed and insured.
No license, no proof of insurance, no buy gun.
Gun owners may not like it, but hey, I don't like getting shot at because some one wants to buy a gun fast at some gun show.

Lets compare this to the Patriot Act......

The government has sold us on the Patriot Act suggesting that yes, we may give up a bit of privacy and freedom to ensure that we are safe...........

Likewise, the banning of guns from the world would indeed make us safer.....but infringe on people's freedom.....

Oddly enough Conservatives support the infringement of freedom for safety in the first case....but not the second.....

and....

Liberals support it in the second case but not the first.....

What a world!

100% agreed. Not a democrat (I'm Independent) but it scares the crap out of me that, from what i see in media, both republicans and democrats want to create massive alterations in Constitution like removing rights or adding to it.

The Constitution is the very basis of our government and meant to be a framework not a detailed schematic...and for anyone to consider "we'll just change it"...it makes me uneasy and fearful.

End the mob mentality

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed-. I'm a liberal, and I understand the reason for a militia was not only to help defend our country from outside invaders, but from domestic invasion as well. As our government seeks to restrict our personal freedoms, there can be no doubt that our 2nd amendment rights will come under attack

the idea to amend the Constitution is just a knee-jerk reaction to the recent events. it should pass...

I truly dont believe that there will ever be enough votes to repeal the amendment.

Nobody is gonna ban guns. They need to just limit them. You can get a gun almost anywhere. Some neocons have about 50 guns just for themselves.
