With all the stuff that has happen at Virginia Tech on Monday April 16th. Do you think we need to have tighter gun control measures in universities?

My personal belief is that we do not need MORE gon control we need less and start enforcing the gun control laws already on the book. I would be all for college professors and graduate students to take a conceled gun classes and get a license for it. If they carry them on campus it should be up to them.

Schools are sitting ducks because of the no firearms rule on campus. That is why whack jobs target them; they will find no one to challenge them and fire back.

I propose training and carry permits for instructors and faculty members. These people might reconsider as schools would not be such an easy target.

BTW...how is the crime rate in Britain and Australia these days? Criminals still have firearms while citizens cannot defend themselves....no thank you. Your crime rates skyrocketed after the ban while ours remain relatively low.

That sounds all fine and dandy, but then you will have people who will make fake i.d.'s and then they will fall into the wrong hands, as usual.

I agree that there shouldn't be any more gun laws, but maybe stiffer penalities if caught carrying ANY weapon that could harm someone's life.

The decision to carry weapons, is and always will be the decision of the person who has them, but maybe, if someone were to register (and I highly doubt the dude at VT was a registered user, since the serial numbers were filed off), that they endure a series of psycological evaluations. As for when/or/if the weapon is stolen and will be eventually be traced back to the owner, some sort of penalty for not having the weapon under lock and key in a safe place.

This is always such a tense subject, and one that seems to only come up when tragedy occurs. Maybe now, the laws and penalities will be brought forth and harsher punishments will be handed out (unless they take the cowardly way out).

Gun Control Causes Crime. Gun control has never worked anywhere so why cite it as a solution?

I think it was a tragedy first and foremost and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

The killer alone caused the crime, but the high number of victims is directly caused by gun control.

They were just sitting ducks with no way to defend themselves much like the victims of Colin Ferguson. Concealed-carry advocates warned us all long ago to expect tragedies like this as long as we have gun control.

When only criminals have guns the rest of us can only ponder tactics like "notifications."

In a state where concealed-carry is allowed or promoted, the loss of life could have been much less. He may have shot one or two, but a concealed-carrier would have dispatched him right quick.

Sadly there is no way to prevent a killer with a gun. In tribal Africa where there are no manufactured guns, tribesman make them from pipes and rubber-bands so clearly gun control is not the answer. You can make a gun out of wood in an hour! He could have stabbed just as many with a knife.

Since you will never stop the OFFENSE, we must allow ourselves a DEFENSE. We are not all of one culture anymore, so violence will only increase.

HB 1572 was a Virginia state bill to allow college students to carry arms on campus to protect themselves from tragedies like what happened at Virginia Tech. The bill was defeated

The spokesman for Virginia Tech was happy to hear the bill [HB 1572] was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

The fact is NOT passing the bill allowing students to defend themselves caused many more deaths. States that pass concealed-carry laws experience lower crime rates, Texas is a good example of this.

The only way to prevent these killing rampages is concealed-carry. Would you rather protect yourself or wait for the folly of police or school "notification?”

College campuses already ban guns on school grounds. It's literally universal. But I agree with you; CCW's should override those rules for those students who don't live on campus and the staff of the school.

The trouble is allowing students to keep guns in dorms. Dorms are not the most secure places. My dorm room got broken into I don't know how many times, I could never keep anything valuable in it.

Tighter gun control will only be ignored by those who mean to do harm.

Lighter gun control could have one of the following effects:

1) The shooter is dropped quickly and a major tragedy is averted.

2) Armed students could miss (and possible injure other students), and/or those who are killed first could possibly provide more bullets to the shooter.

A better security system (more cameras, more police, etc.) and a better communications infrastructure would have averted the second wave of shootings.

Most college campuses already have polices that ban the carryimg of weapons on campus, and having one in dormotories. However, someone determined to go on a killing spree isn't going to abide by that law, so passing new tougher laws would be pointless. Besides, you can pass all the laws you want, but they are useless unless one plans on enforcing them.

I agree with your second statement. The campus already had a no guns allowed policy and this didn't stop that individual from taking a gun on campus. Also there are laws against murder, but that didn't stop him either.

That's not always true, even if it were true of him. Everyone says I'm pretty likely to do something like that, though I feel like shooting a school makes it look like your emotional development stopped at school. I see myself as an adult and have long left my school days. I would preferr not to talk about my political affilliation because I think it throws a slant on my answers, and I'd rather have them taken as they are, but I am far from marxist and muslim.

Guns are already banned on college campuses in VA. That's why all those students were perfectly safe and didn't get shot, oh wait, no they weren't and yes they did.

There is already a law that states you can not carry a gun on any school campus...what else can be done...if someone wants to break the law, they will...
