I tried to copy the whole file onto a separate hard drive and must have inadvertantly requested a copy each time it opens but don't know how. Please have you a SIMPLE solution.

Try running the program from the Start - Programs - Family Tree Maker icon. See if this does the same thing.
If this works, delete the icon on the desktop and replace it by copying the icon in the Programs menu to the desktop.
