Our daughter was born in May '06. We had trouble with a spelling error on the vital record, with the result that we still haven't gotten her an SSN.

(It's my understanding that we absolutely CANNOT claim her without a number. Is this technically true!?)

Anyways, my question is this: If we file now without her, can we modify our filing later on, after she has been given a number? Like, if we apply and get her a number next month, is there a form we can submit changing our 2006 taxes after filing, so that we can still get the deduction?

Why dont you wait until your daughter receives her SS number before you file the return?

File an extension today (Form 4868) indicating no estimated taxes due.

Otherwise, yes, you can file your 1040 now, and when you receive the SS number, you can file an amended return (Form 1040X) and pick up the extra deduction.

As a tax professional, I would not suggest doing it this way. Why? Mainly because, it will take the IRS 6 to 8 weeks to process your return if you file
today. The majority of taxpayers wait until the final minute to file. The IRS
is overwhelmed by filings on the last day.

File an extension today. The reason taxpayers file extensions, is because of a lack of information unavailable by the tax filing deadline. Your problem is one of the many reasons taxpayers do not file by the filing deadline.

It is always best to file a complete return, rather than a return that will be amended. More often than not, amended returns raise a flag for an audit.

Wait a month and file.

You should file an extention Form 4868. This automatically gives you 6 months to file your return. You must still have this postmarked by 11:59pm April 17th(tonight).

However, if you will owe money even after her deduction you must pay that amount today. If you do not you will be hit with additional penalties and interest.

You should do your return with her as a deduction now to make sure you won't owe. But don't send it in until you get her SSN. If you do find out you owe then just pay that money with the extention so when you file your return you will be fine.

Its absolutely NOT true. you can file a return with "Applied" in the SS# field. You cannot e-file the return and it may take a while to get your refund, but you still can file it by mail. Also, by not having a SS#, you might not get certain credits like EIC, child tax credit or dependent care credit, but you can amend for that later.

Some states will not allow you to file unless you have either SS# or ITIN #. Massachusetts is one of them.

I've done several returns this way.

Yes you can modify your return. File a form 1040X showing the changes

That's not "technically" true, it's absolutely true. No SSN means no exemption. Period.

However, you should file your return now without the exemption and then file an amended return on Form 1040X once you get her SSN.

You can file for an extension if you know you are to get money back but not if you have to pay in.
