Apparently, you can have a pet penguin in Japan. I am insanely jealous. Can we have them in America? I am not kidding. I want a penguin! Thank you.

Mostly it depends on the State that you live in.Each have their own exotic animal laws, that is if they actually have any.All States have laws about native species and the keeping of them but have few if no laws regarding non-native species.Exotic animals do not fall under any jurisdiction so there is little law on them.Importing an animal into the USA has to do with clearing customs.Customs doesn't dictate the type of animal coming in only the health of it and the area it is coming from.Exceptions to this are endangered and threatened species which are protected. These require special licenses.
Just because you want an animal as a pet doesn't mean you should have one.Penguins would require special needs that few people could supply. Not all penguins live in cold areas still they do have special needs.Perhaps it is best to admire them where they are rather then bringing one home and have it become a nuisance.

I'm not going to say and I'm not saying no because to be honest with you, I don't know. I've never heard of anyone in the US having a penguin as a pet. Have you thought of the environment that penguins have to live in. I hope you live in a very cold place. Having any type of pet requires a lot of work, patience and responsibility. Are you ready for that? Give it some good thought before you get a pet, especially a penguin

I'd say your best bet is to ask your vet. Also keep in mind to be a responsible pet owner with an exotic pet you should make sure there is a vet local to you that will treat the bird should he/she become sick. Also remember to tally up what you think the food bill might be. Having an exotic pet is more than a cool thing to do, it's lots of work, research, and money. (more so than with your non-exotics)

I don't think penguins are allowed as pets. They are cute as all get out, but they smell funny. Plus they are a social creature, so it would be advisable to have more than one.

Please be sure you are fully aware of the care and feeding requirements of any pet prior to bringing it to your home. It's our responsibility to make sure we as "owners" supply our pets with the best possible care.

I've never heard of such a thing. The United States has pretty strict laws about wild animals being imported into the country, so I would imagine that's why. Now, if somebody in the US was ever to start a captive breeding and selling program, you never know...

Go to allexperts.com and there are professionals there to answer your question. What I found is that it depends on your state law, since it varies. But some do allow you if you have a permit, they are allowed in warm climates (there are two species that can live in warm climates) and so on. So I would suggest that you ask them, they will help you alot more!! Hope this helps.
