One of the aims is to take pure science, even theoretical science and put it into practice, or practical use.
If this process of taking science and putting it to practical use can be merged with art, that's even better. An example of this would be a bridge over a river. It's one thing to build a simple truss, but to make it structurally sound and look ascetically pleasing is both engineering and art.

Engineering is an applied science. It is the means by which knowledge acquired by Pure Science (math, chemistry, biology, physics) is put to use for the betterment of mankind.
The use is generally applied to structures, processes, networks, machines, apparatus. It also applies to using a combination of the above to build more complex machines, structures, etc.
