Being the first born in that culture, the family business, property, etc. would have been passed on to Him. Since His mission wouldn't involve that, those things were certainly passed on to one of his half brothers. Not James since he chose to follow Jesus. Likewise, He no doubtedly had more responsibilities. But that had nothing to do with His heavenly authority.
Throughout His ministry He lived as a servant, only taking dominion over the spiritual world. I can't see Him growing up in a way that was different from that. Although, even in light of what had to be unmatched self control, I doubt that he was responsible spiritually until His coming of age, just like any other child.
Remember, even though He was God incarnate, He didn't spare Himself any of the experiences we have to go through growing up or as an adult. Because of that, we can't say that He doesn't understand our circumstances.

Mary didn't have any other children besides Jesus.
When Jesus refers to his "brothers" in the Bible, if you look at the original language of Aramaic, there was only ONE word for brother, cousin, close friend, etc. John the Baptist, who is clearly his cousin, Jesus called "brother."
When Jesus turns to the John the Beloved at the Cross and says "John, this is your mother, mother, this is your son," Jesus is welcoming John into his family as an adopted brother. During those times, women had no rights. If Jesus had not done that, Mary would have been sold into slavery or prositution since she had no other living male relatives. Jesus needed to place her into a family so she would be taken care of and not be left abandoned.

I've wondered about his youth as well. Knowing that He was the Messiah had to influence the way He was raised.
It doesn't seem as though there were any major issues between Jesus and His siblings, so my assumption is that Mary was likely level headed.

Probably not. He was a carpenter was he not? And the town folk stated what was the big ado about Jesus, intoning that they saw him as just Jesus, the kid down the block?

There is no scriptural evidence to indicate such.
She was carefully chosen of God to raise and care for Him during his visit to our planet...I would think that she would not have favored Him(at least, outwardly) and further,I do not think that Jesus, would have accepted favoritism.
Interesting question...never have considered it.
