Another idea that sounds great in scifi, but not so good in real life. The theory behind it isn't that the caning itself will deter crime, but that the shame of having been caned publicly would deter crime. But we seem to have burned out that shame circuit a long time ago.

I believe that so much crime happens because the punishment does NOT fit the crime anymore.
If you were caught as a teenager spray painting the high school gym walls and you were paddled ... would you do it again? Unless you were a moron, I think not.
If you were caught vandalizing property then YES cane the boy. If you were caught stealing, give him the badge of honor and chop off his middle fingers. If you were caught with armed robbery chop off his middle AND shooting fingers. If you rape somebody cut off his below the belt package. If you drink and drive you should be charge with attempted vehicular homicide there would be fewer people drinking and driving. If you kill somebody, then you should be immediately taken and killed -- screw death row.
If we create a deterrent high enough NOT TO commit the crimes then fewer crimes would be committed. We spend FAR to much money to "rehabilitate" our criminals. Some can be rehabilitated but the time has come to punish them correctly.

We have tried everything else, and it has not worked! Why not? Singapore does not have the problems that we have. Besides, when you lock people up in jail/prison, they tend to beat up on each other. Wouldn't a little whipping be more humane in the long run?

I'd think so, I like the idea myself, but I'm sure there will be a group out there who will try to apply the racisim factor to that one. They'd be the ones who needed a good public flogging the most.

If we held people accountable for thier actions instead of letting them off the hook because they "had a bad childhood" there would be less crime.

I think it may reduce certain kinds of crime (maybe certain mischiefs), but I wouldn't want to live in that kind of society. The death penalty doesn't really deter murder does it?
I also don't believe that the solution to a misbehaving child is to strike them either. Violence makes more violence.
