God isn't the one with ego and lack of self-esteem, it's people. By appearing to demand worship, God is meeting people's needs. Whether it is a celebrity, the pursuit of financial gain, their children, their nation...everyone worships something. The ones who write scriptures need to worship a god.

I think you're thinking of it in human terms. God doesn't need anything - He's self-sufficient in that way! ;)
But, He created us so that He could love us and so we could love Him. In fact, its our highest duty, our highest calling and our greatest pleasure to worship Him. In turn, it brings the Creator of the Universe glory when he receives praise.
He doesn't need us. But when thinking about the highest being in the universe, one so great that we can't comprehend His greatness, we can understand that glorifying Him may just be the greatest calling in the universe.
The Bible says that even the things of the earth call out His name in praise. We are to do the same - it is both His glory and ours. No, we don't worship him to boost his ego - we worship Him because He alone, as the perfect creator, deserves glory. And in turn, we are lifted up in our highest manner through worship.
Remember, also, that worship doesn't simply mean singing songs of praise to Him. It means doing His will on earth - helping others, loving those around us and spreading the wonderful story of His love. Who wouldn't agree that helping and loving others is a great thing? This can be a form of worship.
When you think of worship that way, does it even come into the realm of "ego" or "self-esteem"? Its simply doing what God would want us to do.

God doesn't need us to worship Him.
We are children of a loving Heavenly Father. He placed us on this earth to grow and develop and to understand the principles of happiness by experiencing more directly what happens when people make both good and bad decisions. Just as parents care deeply for their children, He loves us and wants what's best for us.

Ok, I'll bite. Why do YOUR children need to worship and respect you.
Stop having birthdays. Stop celebrating Mother's day. Stop celebrating Valentine's day. Shed your own ego first. Next time eveyrone forgets to worship you on your birthday, don't get depressed. I mean, it's just an ego thing. It really is!

God does not need but we need
In Islam, the term "worship" covers any action that one does in accordance with the will of Allah. It can be mental, physical, spoken, or otherwise. All such actions will be rewarded.
The purpose of worship in Islam is to be God conscious. Thus the worship, whether it is prayer, fasting, or charity, is a means to achieve God consciousness so that when one becomes conscious of God, in thought and in action, he is in a better position to receive His bounties both in this world and the hereafter

hi there =) i hope my answer will let you know why God wants ppl to worship Him. ok you see, place your self in a shoe of a parent, would u want your child to give you respect and show their love to you? of course yes, it's a way of showing how much they love you. you've done everything for them , care for their living and also provide everything they need, so when they love you in return, would you call ur self ego? i mean it tatally doesn't make sense rite? since we can't see God face to face everyday, so worshiping Him is a way to show we love Him, we respect Him. i hope this brief answer does calm ur curiosity regarding why shud we worship God, and sometimes, it is good to ask question about Him, so that He knows that you want to get to know more about Him. may God Bless you.

In the Beginning God was alone. He split Himself into a billion billion pieces and filled the Universe so He could have friends.
Not conventional Christianity, but it's how I see it.

It`s not really about worship from God`s perspective it`s about love, and God doesn`t even need our love but it is a two way street when two beings feel strongly about one another.
