I have heard two explanations of this occurance. One the person's voice that you recognize is either thinking of you or is in trouble.
Two it is evil and don't answer the voice you heard. Go find the person.
Personal experience, on many occasions my mom has thought of me or my siblings and we call her on the phone. When we were younger we would come home. I mean she would say to someone home or think to herself, where is this person and that person would walk through the door. We never thought anything was wierd, it was just that our mom and she loves us and has our best interest at heart. Families have bonds no one can explain.

It means you've experienced a tiny little hallucination. Nothing to worry about. There is a part of the temporal lobe called Wernicke's area, which is responsible for the comprehension of language. When Wernicke's area is stimulated with a tiny pulse of electricity, the subject hears a word that often is contextually related to their thoughts. If you are subconsciously thinking of your mother and if Wernicke's area is stimulated by an unintelligible sound in your environment, it is perfectly natural for you to hear your mother's voice. The effect is analogous to an audio form of an optical illusion. It's perfectly normal and it's most assuredly not mental telepathy, though it is very tempting to think so. Everybody's brain is constantly creating the illusion of reality in their mind. This illusion of reality ("solipsism" in philosophical terms) is a mental model based on a combination of sensory inputs and internal mental expectations. Occasionally, expectations are experienced as reality due to ambiguous sensory inputs. It's why optical illusions work and one reason why people hear voices that aren't really there. It has nothing to do with schizophrenia or religious visions and is simply a sign of your humanity.

It's a natural human reaction. Whenever you hear or see something you try to make sense of it by comparing it to something you've seen or heard before. How many times have you heard someone "really" saying your name? Your own name is also one of the most comforting things you can hear. If you're a little stressed - even just a bit tired - then of course you're more likely to "hear your name."
Either that or your mother is a witch. I'll leave you to decide which is more likely!

I recall that happening with me and my Mom.
My family and I went camping and Me, my brother and our friends went swimming in the lake.
The current got very strong and started pulling me down, I was drowning, and finally my brother was able to get to me.
At the time that was happening my Mom said she heard me calling her, so she told my Dad to go check on us.
She already knew something was wrong before we told her what happened.
Somethings we just can't explain.

Some people believe that we hear people calling us when those who have crossed over are wishing to get in touch with us. We hear them in the voice of people we recognize as it's easier for them to get our attention with these voices.

I attribute it to attending too many concerts in my youth.
Seriously, your mom was probably thinking of you. The mind can do incredible things that only seem mystical.

I've heard that schizophrenia can be hereditary, so I'd suggest going to a doctor and maybe getting on some anti-psychotic drugs.
