I'm having a BBQ for my birthday and am inviting around 20 people. What can I cook on the BBQ that wil appeal to most people and what sort of food should I do to accompany it (salads etc) - bearing in mind I can't afford to spend a fortune!

Have you tried haloumi kebabs? Delicious! Spear chunks of haloumi, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers on kebab sticks and bbq them for a few minutes.

As for salads, have you tried cous-cous? Really easy to make (pour boiling water on it and leave for 20 mins or so), very cheap (one packet feeds loads of people), and you can serve it with chopped spring onions, chopped tomatoes, chopped cucumber in - also try livening it up with a touch of paprika or chilli powder, and some chopped, fresh herbs.

Happy birthday and have fun!

Spicy sausage and hot dogs on the grill always hits home.
Potato salad is a must Canned, heated pork and beans.
Not to much steaks, fills people up to fast. If so small steaks.
Not sloppy potato salads (caused by excessive amount of mayonees.) Green salad on the side. Well thats what I will do.

best potato salad recipe? boil salad potatos (cheap plain ones are best) mix in mayonnaise, add chopped chives or spring onions and mashed hardboiled egg. I know it sounds rank but it's actually delicious, bit of paprika can be nice if you have it, costs about £3 for half a kilo of salad

turkey is cheaper than chicken and just as nice

roasted capsicum peppers (literally cut them up and put them on the grill)

grilled sweet potatos

You should buy as many packs of onion ring crisps as you can. And go to iceland you can get 30 burgers for £2! And they do like 40 sausages for £2.50. Chicken drum sticks! Potatoe salad is always nice. Tell people they all have to bring one item!

If folks like fish try the cedar planked salmon....real easy and looks great ! Also make a homemade slaw with napa cabbage, red cabbage and carrots...use a little rice-wine vinegar for an asian twist in the slaw....grilled veggies are always easy and delicious too ! Look for cedar planks at super markets or gourmet food shops....instuctions are usually included....if you need instructions let me know.
