I live in a small town, in a small apartment complex, across the street from a high school. It’s for low income, senior citizens & the disable. You have to sign a form that you will not use any illegal drugs on the property. (Or sell them as well) Anyway, there are 5 apartments where single mothers, (With 1 to 5 kids), no jobs, sit around all day & watch TV and get high (Smoking Weed). You can almost get high from the smoke coming out of these 5 units at times. The real problem is that if their kids are with them, then they are getting yelled at for anything and everything while watching mom get high. Or, if mom is really wasted, then they are off running around the streets doing whatever. My question is: What can be done? I’m in California where most don’t see weed as a big deal. However, it costs money to buy it and they are using our tax dollars to purchase it. I’ve have even seen them sell it to the kids across the street at the high school. Not only are they spending our money to get high, but the money should be going to feed, cloth and take care of their kids. With mom high, the kids are not getting the emotional support they need as well. So what can be done? I’ve talked with the sheriff and it’s like no big deal because we’re going after the big drug dealers. Any help would be great…

You can report suspected child neglect or abuse to the child protection service in your area. Contact the landlord (tenant association or owner) of the building and report the fact that you can smell the drugs outside of the apartments in question. If you are sure that the smell is coming from, let's say apartment "A", call the police. Chances are the drugs will be flushed when they knock on the door but, the smell will linger and the police can contact the child protection workers as well. Call it in as a "check on the well being of children" at that apartment not as a drug complaint. There is a better chance that it will be dispatched and attended to in a timely manner.

Notify child services that the children are living in an unsafe environment and are being neglected. The state will investigate the charges.

Here, these families would be evicted for breaking the law by having illegal drugs in their apartments. Using illegal drugs in front of minor children is breaking the tenets of the lease they signed with the state or city welfare services.

I agree with you completely. Just for perspective: I live in Florida, where your tax dollars are being squandered Astonishingly on endless testing (that scares the heck out of them) and drugging and chopping and medicating of old people just because they can afford all this meddling out of the bottomless supply of Medicare. Now, the "working poor" in this neighborhood have to medical care, of course, but if they're disabled or on welfare, they do. (Tempting, isn't it?) I had an absessed tooth recently. I can assure you, there's no help of any kind on the horizon for me for twelve years at least. Meanwhile, for all my dear elderly friends in this neighborhood, if 90% of their medical care were to be removed, they would be so much better off. My 99-year-old mother-in-law is an example. When she got kicked out of the nursing home, we had her meds reduced as well, so we could all afford it. She's doing better than ever, while all the younger old folks are living in terror from one unpleasant medical experience to the next.

I turned on the radio today and heard that the invaders from Mars had landed so it must be true. (War of the World reference there). Actually, sweet heart, the biggest percentage of our tax dollars goes to salaries of government employees and there nice benefits and pensions, the second biggest thing our tax dollars go to is the military which could be lumped into government employees, and the third is for programs like WIC, food stamps, etc. Of course programs like that also create jobs. I have substituted for Head Start which is a pre school program for low income families. so it created jobs for people and allowed moms and dads to work as opposed to just sitting on their bums all day. I think you need to check your facts!

Gather evidence, times, places, events. Write it down and turn it in to the police. Make them do something about it. Call Social Services. Unfortunately our country's social system allows this. I am an American living in Germany for 7 years now, I've never seen things like that here!?! The funny thing is, I grew up in a place like you described!

I don't agree with it, but the argument that people are using up your tax dollars for this, that, and the other thing is bullshit.

We see these exact questions all damn day long. People complaining about illegals, complaining about people on welfare, complaining about anything they can possibly think of.

Smokers (tobacco) take up more of your tax dollars than a few deadbeats.

Obese people take up more of your tax dollars than a few deadbeats.

This unlawful war takes up the majority of our tax dollars.

If you're really concerned about your tax dollars, there are least 3 places you should look before some deadbeats on welfare.

If you wanna argue that it's just wrong, then I agree with you. Don't start about tax dollars tho.

its a sad world and sad that innocent children have to suffer, report it to the police and call child protection on them. just because its low cost housing you still dont deserve to have to put up with the smell off pot and the other potential dangers that come along with drugs and drug dealing ! goodluck

If this is happening across the street from a public school,it is probably a federal offense. Try to contact your local branch of FBI.
