Well the problem is that their "good book" is not as absolute as they would have you believe, and thus is opened to many different interpretations.
Everyone knows that the god written in the OT is brutal, which is why he was given an overhaul. Think of it as an old-time celebrity who picks up a new talent to stay popular with the modern times. Like the way Aerosmith is always changing their sound to conform to pop culture & continue selling records.
Do you think that christianity would have as many bible-readers & devout followers if this god remained brutal & savage? Probably not! It's just an image makeover to appeal to a different crowd. I'm sure there are those old-timers who believe the OT god was better than the NT god.... there's always people who enjoy the classics more than the new stuff.

God is not a robot. We are created in His own image (though we're not perfect), thus it would make sense for Him to have emotions as we do, right?
And Jesus had emotions, too - he felt saddened, distraught, angry and joyful.
If you have more than one emotion, does that mean you have a split personality? No - it means that you are human. And once again, I'll mention that humans are made in God's image.
I'm not sure who you've talked to...but any believer should point straight at the Bible to discover the attributes of God. Then, you don't have to compare what any two Christians say - you look at our guide and see the truth.

Sounds pretty human, huh? In the original Hebrew, god is called Elohim. Elohim is actually plural for god which would then make the correct translation gods. Notice how "god's" name changes many times in the old testament? When the name changes so does the personality. Draw your own conclusions from what you read, not what you've been taught.Good luck.

God, as the Cosmos, has no personality. The one written about in the bible used to be even more "split personality", but then sometime around the middle ages the Christian church decided to revamp the idea of Satan into his own (evil) person, thus making "God" a helpless, handwringing bystander who watches tearfully as the dark angel lures humankind into damnation.

the single real God is the God of love. The undesirable fruit that the evil individual has to undergo ought to certainly look as vengeful to him. If undesirable human beings conflict through no undesirable consequences, then what's the version of the free decision of guy and the instinctive obedience of the cow!

He's got a really whacky sense of humour,
Flooding the world, killing first borns, turning people into pillars of salt.
He's so much fun.........you'd love to have him over for dinner to crack a few jokes wouldn't you?

I have always understood God`s atributes as being Divine Mercy and Divine Justice both in equal measure, take away any one of these and He cannot be God.
