Religion is a poor indicator of morality. Religion makes people morally lazy. It feeds them WHAT is good and bad (according to their tenets), but discourages people from thinking about WHY it is bad. They're made to be satisfied with just "God said so".
This means that to religious people, morality is just a list. That's why they aren't really tied too closely to it. Of course, there's always their threat of Santa-god watching to see who's naughty or nice, but that doesn't help much.
That might be why you see less crime with atheists. They don't have lists to fall back on, so they tend to think more about why things are right and wrong. If you are the one working through the issues, you'll have more tendency to stick with your morality because it is yours.

How is it men are still using patriotism as an excuse to commit crimes?
How is it men are still using freedom as an excuse to commit crimes?
How it is men are still using economics as an excuse to commit crimes?
How is it men are still using love as an excuse to commit crimes?
It is a little problem called "sin". Every human is born with a part of them that drives them "commit crimes" or others wrongs. Religion, like anything, can be used to try to justify those actions. The mis-use of religion, or anything else, does not make religion itself evil, just as it does not make freedom, love, etc. bad.

Have they not always done so......whatever cult/religion they have been brain washed into oft gives them the inner excuse to commit horrors against others that many of them basically would like to do in any case, but as said brain washing from birth has the major factor. The religion leaders also have that immense " Power Trip " to feed upon. Man, in one form or another, has done this in principle through out history and it is, I am afraid, the " Nature of the Beast ".

Because religion is the one crime people are never prosecuted for. When is the last time a church was ever charged with extortion for telling it's members to tithe or they will be tortured in hell. If any non-religious organization did that they would immediately be brought up on extortion charges.

I have no idea who you are talking about. Maybe you are talking about the Islamic-Fundamentalist Terrorists. I think religion has much less to do with them then appears on the surface. It is power and control that they are interested in.
9/11 was an attempt to cripple our the U.S. stock market and government.
If you are talking about people like the U.S. president, He is not committing crimes in the name of religion. Everybody seems to like to kick him.
I have been in the religious community for many decades and I have never heard of a church threatening hell on those who do not tithe. It is not Biblical. Some people just make up this c**p and stick it an answer. They have such hate, that truth is not important.
If you modify your question, I will modify my answer.

People use lots of excuses to commit crimes (religion is just one of them). Bad home life, child abuse, I was drunk, I was high on drugs, I was physically abused, etc.

It's always easier to excuse your actions than take responsibility for them, I suppose.

People need to justify their actions.
Some evil people falsely use Religion to justify evil.
It is those people that are evil, not Religion.
Peace!
