It's a very good question. If it's postulated that consciousness, or awareness, or sense of self resides in the soul, it's difficult to see how this can be reconciled with the complete oblivion which accompanies general anaesthesia. How could a straightforward chemical, injected into the bloodstream, anaesthetise a soul so that it effectively ceases to exist during this time? If consciousness, in the form of a soul, were some kind of supernatural faculty, it would seem implausible that it could be completely disabled by a chemical.
How about some of the other things which we regard as essential parts of what makes a person what they are? How about love, compassion, reason, empathy, memory, conscious thought, character, 'spirituality' and so on? Well, there is really no plausible doubt that all these things are properties of the physical brain - We can alter all of these properties very simply with alcohol or other drugs, and observe how they change in people who have suffered significant brain damage. Previously placid people become uncontrollably violent, intelligent people become imbeciles, and so on. Stimulate the brain artificially, and the subject reports corresponding mental activity, e.g. 'religious experiences'. We can see from brain research that all these things - thought, emotion, sensation, character traits and so on - are correlated with activity in the brain, and some things can be identified with specific areas of the brain.
So, if all these faculties and characteristics of what we regard as the 'person' reside in the physical brain, as seems to be undeniably the case, and they all cease when the person dies, then what is left to be attributed to a 'soul'? As far as I can ascertain: Nothing. If there is no part of us that can continue after death, then there is no 'afterlife'... and if there is no afterlife, then most of religion is null and void.

According to the Bible (Genesis 2:7), when God created man, he did it in three parts. He created a 1)body from the elements of the earth, breathed into it his own 2)spirit, and man became a living 3)soul. Each part of man touches a different real. The body touches the physical universe. The soul handles the mind, will and emotions. The spirit communicates with the heavenly realm and God himself.
The body inputs information from the natural realm. The spirit inputs information from the spiritual realm. The soul is what is located in between and makes the decisions based on those inputs. When the soul acts on information from the body, the Bible calls that "the flesh". When the soul acts on information from the spirit, the Bible calls that "the heart".
While the soul uses the brain as its main connection to the body, it is separate from the brain. The Bible teaches that after death - and the brain has ceased to function - the soul still continues on.

The Bible teaches that the human is made of three parts, a body, a soul and a spirit. The body was created from the dust of the ground, and God breathed into man the breath of God (spirit) and man became a living soul. The soul is that part of man where the natural and the spiritual touch and consists of our reasoning abilities, our volition or ability to make decisions, and our ability to feel emotions. The Bible also says that the soul and the spirit are distinct and different from one another. The soul which is natural cannot interact with the spirit which is spiritual because they are different entities. The only way the soul can access the spiritual is through faith. When you die the spirit is the part that is "born again" and will ascend to heaven to be with God, the soul will not. The soul of the unbelievers will be sent to Hell in the unbeliever. There are verses int he Bible to substantiate all of these statements, email me if you want references.

As long as you are alive and breathing you are a soul (Genesis2:7 ; 1Corinthians15:45 ; Joshuah11:11 ; Acts27:37)
Animals are also called souls in the Bible Numbers31:28 ; Revelation16:3 ; Leviticus24:18)
A Soul has blood running through it eats and can die(Jeremiah2:34 ; Leviticus7:18 ; Ezekiel18:4)

It is the immaterial essence of life. The Scripture says the spirit, or soul, cannot be annihilated. Though the body may die, the spirit will live on. Death, therefore is not the end of conscious life. It is the separation of the body and the spirit. The spirit, however, lives on in another realm. The body is only the temporary residence of humans. Jesus said.
Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell (Matthew 10:28).
Destroy has the idea of punish, not annihilate. The destruction of the soul means separation from the life of God. Though living, the soul of the unbeliever has no connection whatsoever to God.

Soul is the thing which keeps us alive. I am alive. You are alive. A stone is dead. Therefore, there is something in the stone that is not in you that keeps you alive. That is your soul. An animal has a soul, when it dies, the soul of the animal dies too. But the soul of men and women is spiritual. It will never die. It is not a material soul like that of plants and animals, therefore our souls will live forever. Our souls are in our bodies. When we die, our heart stops beating and our soul separates from our body. The body decays into dust and the soul will either go to heaven, hell or purgatory after the particular judgement. At the end of the world, we will have the general judgement. Our bodies will be united to our souls. Our bodies will rise again. Our bodies and souls will go to heaven if we are good and die in a state of grace, or without mortal or venial sins that have not yet been fully atoned for on earth. Our bodies and souls will go to where they deserve to go if we have sins that have not yet been fully atoned for on earth.

Dear Friend,
The soul, in the Biblical sense is the body and spirit together (which is the foce by which we are animated) See the following scripture.
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
God Bless

I believe that the soul is the combination of the Spirit and the Physical Body...
There are two deaths.. one is Spiritual death.. which is seperation from God.. the other is Physical death...
There are some people who have been spared Physical death.. Elijah and Enoch are two...
EVERYONE will be resurrected (Physical body alive again and combined back with the Spirit) just as Jesus resurrected.

All humans have a soul and it is that part of our essence of who we are that is spiritual and can not be seen by others. What we do and do not do can be seen by others but our actual soul is like that of the living God and cannot be seen or touched by any others except God. Make sure your soul is in the hands of God (Jesus Christ) because if it is not it is in the hands of Satin the devil who wants to destroy you and kill your soul.

The soul is you - your actual being, the part which endures for all eternity. The soul is spiritual, so it does not have a location. It does not exist in the physical universe, but it has a relationship with the body, which is severed at death. When one dies, the soul is free to progress throughout the spiritual worlds of God.
