It takes more than 3 days, but it is possible that it is not working. Continue THE SAME medication for as long as it was prescribed, take some painkillers in the meantime, and if by the end of the treatment it still hurts (after you stop the painkillers) ask your doctor if you should prolong or change the medication. Just make sure you talk with your doctor before you stop taking the antibiotics, because if the treatment needs to continue, it must be done without an interval.
Also, the salty water mouthwash is a good idea, but not hot, actually cold water may help you feel better. Also clove oil is a natural local anaesthetic, you can use a couple of drops on the aching tooth.
If you have pulpitis what the followig answerer says is correct. Ask your dentist.

Do you have a dental hospital in your area? They hold a sort of "dental A&E" in the mornings. Or you could try a neighbouring dental practice for an emergency appointment. Your GP may be reluctant to administer antibiotics for dental pain, due to the fact that it is the wrong speciality. I definitely recommend calling NHS Direct for details. Good luck, dental abscesses are incredibly painful, get well soon.

You need to finish course of metronidazole , you can take antiinflammitry painkillers to help pain.Antibiotics only clear any infection , they are not painkillers.Do not drink alchol whilst taking metronidazole ,as this will make you sick.Go back to your dentist after finishing course , if still in pain.

i had once aching tooth, was having root channal treatment and taking antibiotics. it wass aching a few days after i stopped taking antibiotics. i called my doctor, she said wait at least 2 days and then if it is still aching vcome again. also after having a big and deep filling your tooth is irritated, it might be aching just because of that. so usually they ask to wait a few days for it to calm down. 3 days is just the time. wait 2 more days and then contact doctor. do not do it before, they might open it again and irritate it again. also take ibuprofen, they say it also helps with inflammations.

Boost it with some natural nutrition and a few herbals. Make sure that they're organic. I recommend:
-Calcium Magnesium: your teeth are made of Calcium and your body needs Magnesium in order to absorb it
-Protein: the inside of your teeth and bones are made of protein, and protein also speeds up your recovery from infections and injuries.
-Vitamin C: protects your body from damage and increases your immune system
-Echinacea: known to increase your immune system and naturally fight off unwelcome microorganisms
-Garlic: idem as echinacea
Try Nutrilite, they make these supplemets from whole plants (foodstuffs) grown on isolated organically certified farms. I consume them and find them very helpful in recovery from anything. Research them on www.nutrilite.com, a very transparent website.
